well she is classified among the artists who's releases are distributed and who are managed by AVEX (check the file, it has each and every AVEX artist/public figure classified).

I have to thank you again for this pdf file... it's really insightful. Thanks!

So I guess avex "knows" what sort of marketing strategy to adopt on Ayu... not to my liking but oh well, what can any of us do about it lol

The point is that you dont earn money from music sales any more. Its all about touring, touring, touring. In a time where everyone has itunes and can buy a song for 0,99€ or 1,29$ its worthless to sell million of records. Look at other top acts like Madonna, her last studio album Hard Candy (2008) was a flop just selling 3,8 million worldwide. But the tour to the album became the second highest-grossing tour ever with $408,000,000. So artists and record labels gaining their money from tours and thats why Ayu and Namie have much more concerts now than in the years before.

And when you look at the List of highest-grossing concert tours you see that mostly all tours are from the 2000s.

People still do earn money from music sales, but it takes a very long time, and the amount of money you make depends on how involved you are in it. People who write and compose their music earn a lot more than people who just sing a song and have it put onto a CD.

Like you said, it's all about touring. You earn much more money quicker with touring. But touring also has to do with production costs - with a smaller stage, you can do less shows. But with a grand stage, that costs more, so touring more would also help pay those costs and earn a bit more money as well.

the sales of You were/BALLAD and CD only ver. dropped on jbook while the BALLAD version (which was the one that was usually the one people bought less) is now selling better, so I am guessing they could be having issues with stock, except if the drama didn't do something >.< which I doubt.

The whole 10th Anniversary thing is to blame she couldn't do a December album as usual. TRICK was released almost a month before NEXT LEVEL as far as I recall and only THE SECRET CODE was released in the same week and that's only because it was the end of fiscal 2009, so that's the only reason they packed many of their A list artists albums/singles in Feb/March 2009.
That's precisely my point isn't it. That her singles sales are still doing well yet promotion for them have fallen, which opposes the logic that Avex's decreased promotion is a response to dropping sales from her releases.

Wasn't referring to TRICK. Kuu's fourth best of album, Out Works and Collaboration Best was released on 25th March, exact same day as Toho's and Ayu's studio albums.

Not really impressed with the sales, I think the release date did kill her. If she released back on December 15th, she would have sold more.

releasing on the original release date would really kill her & Fukuyama Masaharu-san would kick her big time

Hatsukoi sold about 152K+ in the 1st week & I don't think You were ... / BALLAD might be able to accomplish that within a week

with the looks of these sales, another album after 2 singles seems like it's assuredly going to be less than NEXT LEVEL

Thanks for this list, but one question. I think Miyuki Nakajima's streak is 7, not 6. I have 生きていてもいいですか to miss M. While it did only reach #2 under the CD format, LP's were still much more dominant at the time of Miss M's release and I think oricon would rank it #1.

On another note impressive how high Ayumi and BoA rank. I think Ayumi is safe of BoA because BoA's releasing her album against Funky Monkey Babys best of album...
