I thought bouya in Japanese translated as slang for boys or something a la BOYStachi...

Yeah bouya translates directly to "boy" but it's like calling someone "Kid" but only for males. It's the same kanji used in "akanbou" which means infant. The only time I saw it extensively used was in a book and the speaker was saying it very pretentiously.
