She's had money her whole life, and she always will, even if she wasn't famous~ I don't think she's like, totally careless or anything, but I think she's got a different way of seeing it than other people who really HAVE to care...you know... this thread is so dead.

I don't think that Utada cares any more/less about her fans than other artists, I just think the way that she goes about marketing herself is a complete change from that of other artists. For example, she has a free blog that (in her prime/most active stages of her career) she updated with lengthier and probably more frequent postings than other artists whose blogs you had to pay for. Also, during her major milestones (her anniversary and such) she allowed her fans to download automatic & one other song for free (I can't remember the latter, if anyone wants to help me out), whereas when other artists release new material their paying-fans-only can receive the new material first (and still have to pay for it) or get a ringtone version for free. I just think as far as her marketing schemes go, she is less concerned with putting a price on everything she does, and more concerned with people just enjoying the material she puts out. Whatever she's doing, I think it's working. With her allowing these little "freebies" so to speak, people don't mind shelling out a bit of money to pay for things like a new Utada CD or a singles collection. Just a little oversight into why she does the things she does. I could be completely wrong, but we'll probably never know for sure. |

She just tweeted that she would think it's a good idea to quit Twitter next year, but because she still has "television broadcasting" in January, she will keep on Tweeting for a bit. I wonder what that's all about..

Let's not forget though, that Utada is in a VERY special position. She gets to do some of these things because her parents manage her and she's basically been allowed to do what she's wanted to her entire life. In Japan, generally, a company basically OWNS a singer. I know some like Ayu have managed to gain a large portion of power over their own careers, but most are practically slaves to their management.
She's very privileged to be able to do it. Of course, that doesn't take away from the fact that it's NICE she does it, just saying that other artists not doing it won't automatically make them greedy bastards : P |

Yeah I agree. artists like ayu or hikki are quite rare in Japan industry. Most of them cannot control their own careers. Hikki's management is U3, which is her dad's company. Again, even if an artists' management company is a family business, it doesn't mean one can be as free as hikki. It's lucky for her that her dad is not as restrictive as a normal Japanese manager (probly because they've been living in the US for a while, adopting a more freedom style?).
Ayu was rebellious in the beginning, and it's good that she could fight for her rights since the beginning (even tho she couldn't really break the controlling from avex). I think the point where she could grab her power was the time when she threatened to leave avex when the company wanna kicked max away. Of course she did have some degree of controlling before that event, but I believe when Max overpowered, he gave her tons of controlling power to her own career. I don't think she could foresee that when she stepped up for him during the event tho.. ![]()

I always wonder, was Ayu's contract with avex coming to a close when she threatened to leave? Because if she was under contract yet she couldn't exactly walk away right then and there.

^I think she just didn't care what the consequences were, and Avex was just not going to risk it at all, cause she was still megapopular then.
