Artists that will stand the test of time
Here's an idea for a thread... which present day artists do you think will be still remembered and listened to in 100-200 years?
I'll have to think about this one to be honest... Maybe some of the soundtracks composed by Hans Zimmer, such as the Lion King (only 4 pieces though), and Clint Mansell, the Fountain in particular, Lux Aeterna is memorable too. Elliot Goldenthal's Interview with the Vampire is a good score as well. There are artists such as Led Zeppelin and the Beatles who are still alive (I only know of John Lennon's death), but I don't listen to them... Elton John maybe, but once again, I'm not a fan, so in the end it does come down to personal taste. I can't think of a modern day Beethoven, Mozart, Bach or Chopin though. Naturally, they're not everyone's cup of tea, I myself listen to only one of them, but they're known throughout the world, and most importantly they're respected. Edit; My mistake, shouldn't this be in the general music chat section? Last edited by Melodie; 5th January 2011 at 05:38 AM. |

i think there will be many artists:
Michael Jackson he isn't my favourite anyway... but he's the king of pop... Elvis the king of hips ^^ i think all of u know him, but he's death for a long time now... Madonna i really don't like her (except the one or the other song) but she really is a legend now... she isn't the prettiest anyway... her music and her carrier count i think ^^ Britney Spears and/or christina aguiliera i think they're one of the best the world have ever seen... forgot the silly things britney did... i think only about carrier and music Lady GaGa I'm not sure, because her carrier wasn't so long actually, but i think if she suprise the world again and again, over a long timeline, she'll be a legend too ^^ The Beatles who don't know them? ![]() i think about Take That too..., but i'm not sure about this ^^ yeah~

Beyonce
Alicia Keys Mariah Carey Celine Dion Barbra Streisand Britney Spears Rihanna Lady Gaga Madonna Personally some of the people I wrote probably won't be remembered for their talent but probably for their marketing technique and contribution to Pop music. I can't think of a modern day Beethoven, Liszt, Bach and Mozart, I doubt if there'll ever be in my lifetime but I'm hopeful that there'll be someone who'll revolutionize music industry soon and no I don't think Gaga is revolutionizing pop music, she's just using the techniques and styles that's always been around profusely. |

Beatles, Elvis, other old artists that people love, etc.
Rihanna, she has so many number one hits that she's going to be around for a while. Mariah Carey is legendary, especially if you were born in the 90s. Koda Kumi, I plan on making my children listen to her so that they pass on her music taste My nephews already like her and they range from age 3 - 7. I'm such a bad uncle

Hurm. I don't know which music there will be in the future, I'd like to hear it but well.. I can't
. So, for me are:Classical composers as Beethoven, Strauss, Vivaldi, Mozart, Chopin and others. Bob Dylan because of his lyrics and maybe John Lennon too (just for Imagine). Billie Holyday, Edith Piaf, Aretha Franklin, Freddy Mercury for the amazingness of their voices. But I should include Mariah Carey, Barbra Streidsan and Celine Dion as well. Although I'm not a big fan of their music. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd because they're true legends and their music is really inspirational. But we can't forget huge and popular artists such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Radiohead, The Beach Boys, and many others. I would include Lady GaGa and Madonna as well though. They're maybe not so talented (even if I heard some songs of Lady Gaga, before her career and she has a great voice) but they know how to catch people's attention and they're great performers.

I think the impact an artist makes hugely determines their legacy in the future. With that being said...
Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, and Madonna All three are amazing in their own way, whether it be their actual compositions, fashion, or artistic values. Each of the three have impacted the music industry in such a way not many other artists have: they have been, or currently are, a phenomenon. Some of you said Lady Gaga isn't "amazing," but I think what's amazing about her is how fearless she is when it comes to expressing herself. Not only that, but her songs are actually really catchy as well; she knows her way around a great hook. The Beatles, Take That, Spice Girls These three groups have gone on to show critics they can stand the test of time; the former two are without a doubt much more popular than the last, but no one can deny the phenomenon the Spice Girls caused worldwide their "Girl Power." I'm pretty sure The Beatles and Take That may be listened to for quite some time, I'm not entirely sure about the Spice Girls; I still believe they'll be appreciated to an extent, though. Girls Aloud, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood Living proof winning a TV talent competition isn't just a fluke, after all. They're all successful in their own countries, some of them internationally as well, but they've gone on to show musical critics they're to be taken rather seriously, and aren't as manufactured as people think they are. There are a few more I'm considering, but I would want to wait a couple years before actually mentioning them. ![]() The "TV Talent" group may seem sketchy, but considering each artist has a 5+ (or approaching one) career, I'm pretty sure they'll still be appreciated in the future, as well. |

Lady Gaga is so overrated, she won't stand the test of time, and I really hope she does flop, there's much better artists out there than her/him/it... and seriously, no one can say that she is a legend AT ALL. What a disrespect for MUSIC...
Now, real artists that are legends: Madonna Tina Turner Cher Beatles Rolling Stones Whitney Houston Mariah Carey Edith Piaf Aretha Franklin Freddy Mercury Elton John AC/DC Michael Jackson David Bowie Elvis Ozzy Osborne Eric Clampton Bob Dylan Jimmy Hendrix U2 Frank Sinatra Nirvana Metallica The Beach Boys Barbra Streisand Judy Garland Led Zeppelin Bon Jovi Aerosmith Deep Purple The Scorpions The Who KISS Ella Fitzgerald Nina Simone Barry White Bob Marley ayumi hamasaki Iron Maiden George Michael Gloria Estefan Guns N Roses Slash Hikaru Utada Namie Amuro John Coltrane Kylie Minogue Lenny Kravitz Louis Armstrong Miles Davis Mina Nancy Ajram Pink Floyd Red Hot Chili Peppers Robbie Williams Rod Stewart X Japan Sex Pistols Sting 2Pac

To all those who say Lady Gaga.
Think about it... do you really think that the world will respect her as much as they do classical musicians? If she continues to be the "Mother Monster" that she is now, her outfits are what's more likely to be mentioned, not her music. Unless she records some fantastic stuff in the future. I even doubt that people will care about Madonna in 200 years. I agree about Edith Piaf though. She was magnificent. |

gaga has an image. that weird/unusual personality is something to get her remembered. something to let people know what her music is like. it's worked pretty well so far. before she was lady gaga she was just "stefanie germanotta". a piano playing ballad singer who'd have never gotten anywhere if she just stayed like that. her pre-gaga stuff is pretty damn boring too.
maybe her music won't be remembered. but her clothes, personlity, and weird as hell everything else will be. |
