I myself was on my way home from work when it happened and was one of the millions that found themselves with no way home yesterday, so I walked home for 6 hours. (very tired today) I lived in California for 7 years and never felt an earthquake like this one. In Tokyo, it lasted for at least 3 minutes and was the strongest I have felt before, so I can only imagine what it must have been like in the Northern part of Japan. In Tokyo, it was scary but ultimately not life threatening.

Luckily (well I hate to use the word lucky) but the most effected regions of Japan are pretty rural areas, but definitely the death toll will be higher than 300 especially since I would say the majority of people living there are probably elderly and couldn't get out in time.

My boyfriend's hometown is Sendai and we just learned finally that his sister and nieces are all safe. Still waiting to hear from his friends in that area. Cell phones have been basically useless since the earthquake started. You can still access the net with them, which is how Ayu is able to do Twitter, but even now I can't make any calls.
Oh my! thanks God u r ok, I was worried x______x

It's just awful to think of how much time it will take to clean up everything that's happened, all the houses just wiped out.

Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, YOSHIKI And Other Celebrities Send Messages Of Support

On the day after a devastating earthquake struck eastern Japan, countless celebrities have been offering their condolences and prayers for the victims of the disaster via Twitter.

Singer Hamasaki Ayumi offered her words of support on her Twitter account. "On this day, let's do everything we can do with all our might!" was the emotional call she sent out. Shortly after the earthquake itself, she tweeted this: "Me and my team have stopped everything today. Human life is so precious, so firstly and foremost, I am wishing and praying for the safety of each and every one of you.

Utada Hikaru, who is currently taking a break from her singing career, expressed her concern about the Fukishima Daiichi power plant radiation leak. "Everyone who is being evacuated, everyone who can't get in touch with their loved ones, please stay strong!"

Meanwhile, LA based rock singer Himuro Kyousuke also tweeted an urgent message. "The scale of the damage is shocking. Somehow, please keep on persevering". He also sent out his heartfelt wishes for the safety of everyone affected by the natural disaster.

X Japan's lead singer YOSHIKI tweeted in english "Is everyone alright? I'm praying for all the people who are missing members of family".

Actress Tanabe Seiichi, TERU from GLAY, Suzuki An, and many other famous figures posted encouraging messages on Twitter. It's certain that for people who are struggling to get information about friends, family, and the state of affairs, these celebrities have become an invaluable help to their many followers, giving them a little more courage.
is this the right thread?^

Well, I think this is a good place. It's quite really interesting! I'll cross-post this to the general earthquake discussion thread (http://www.ahsforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107893).

Thanks for your kindness everyone!

Tokyo seems to be getting back to normal, although convenience store shelves are basically empty. Haven't checked a Supermarket yet. We were having small aftershocks still even last night. Tokyo it seems will be fine. The northern part of Honshu though is another story.

I was very relieved to learn during this quake that Japan's strict building codes work! As far as I know, no building in Tokyo fell. Had a quake that lasted this long happened in California I can't imagine not a single building falling.

I was at Takadanobaba station in Tokyo when it happened. It hit just as my train arrived so I got into the train because that was much safer than being on the platform with an overhang and signs above my head. At first, no one really thought anything of it; just like in California, small earthquakes happen quite often. It was after it went on for over 30 seconds that you could see people's faces get the "oh my god is this the big one" look. I don't think it lasted 5 minutes but it was at least 3 which is an eternity for a quake! Soon after I left the station the first aftershock hit and you could see buildings swaying. (thank god for Japanese earthquake architecture!) Had this been a third world country the entire place would be leveled. And honestly, had this been California even I think the damage would have been a lot more severe.

may I ask a question about all this?

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for it, but after what has happened the past day or so, I took things the wrong way and lost a lot more people. I kept reading what Ayu had said after coming home from a movie last night and got to thinking, "How does she do this? How can she be so calm and all while everything is falling apart?"

My thing is, I want to be a better person because of this. I had been depressed for far too long to let things get to me(of course, I still have the parents to worry about, but not for long.) I mean, how does it all start? How can I(or any/every one of us) can be like her or try to be?

Sorry if I'm not posting things right, but just thought I ask. This is me saying I want to change my life for the better.

^ I don't know is this is the right place for this, but thoughts like this usaully go through peoples heads when something major in their live happens.
The truth is, nobody know show they will act when something like this happens.. when it does happen you will react. It might be in a bad way or a good way. not everyone is a hero. Although going through all this I think Ayumi is a hero. She has been doing this ever since all this happened. She may not be in the thick of it, but she is doing all this of her own free will.

Ayumi is Hero!
