She's not actually wearing overalls, I think. It's jeans with jean suspenders! I personally find it cute (perhaps because I love suspenders? XD;; ).
It was a really moving performance. Going barefoot was really fresh. Kind of... humbling? I think the bare feet and the "farmer" outfit is supposed to represent a connection to the earth, to Japan. That's just the feeling I got, though.
