The charts covers a lot more than just Disc (audio/video) sales, it also covers Karaoke, ringtone download and other services/products/radio or other public broadcast. So the ranking do not necessary reflects actual sales. Also, the ranking can be different because of other source of royalities that pulled the overall figure up, one example is 亜麻色の髪の乙女 by Shimatani Hitomi. Her single/album didn't sell well compared to other big names, but this song is
damm popular in Karaoke (I still remembered that my host in Miyasaki sang this in Karaoke back in
end-2002)
「亜麻色―」は前年度も３位だった。
So it's not very surprising that this song can still stay at the 3rd position compared to last year's chart.
JASRAC=RIAA in terms of collections of those fees to have a clearer picture.
