i dont mean to be disrespectful, but this pretty much came to a shock to me. like just too sudden. I am not homophobic and i am happy for Hide for who he is now. but just wondering why would he announce publicly? is this for some publicity? he still looks quite MAN..

^Maybe he came out about it to bring awareness to the issue. Like you said yourself, you are very shocked about it. But, this really isn't something to be overly shocked about, but because it is quite taboo many people react this way, when really it is a understand able thing to do. One of the ways to have the transgendered community be accepted as equals is to talk about it so that people can learn more. I think a lot of the prejudice towards really any parts of the gay/trans community is that people fear what they don't understand. Talking openly about it will get rid of fear and create understanding.

^ i agree with you, but you dont think its shocking to be a man one day and then a woman the next (physically).
I don't think it has anything to do with taboos... but just thinking about it... to a 'normal' person why would you want to change you sex? It's just shocking over all. But it happens and I think the 'shock' factor comes from why someone would do it. Not that they did it. Its hard for people to try and grasp something that they dont understand and people are still arguing over the fact that homosexuality is a choice or not, so for something like this... well you can image how those people feel/ dont understand and find it shocking. |

I can see how it's shocking. It can be shocking for everyone.
Imagine the people around him, maybe there were people who didn't know. Now the person they thought they knew is different. People handle change in different ways. You can never know the situation. But I think it's very important that it's out...especially in Japanese culture. Bringing awareness can always be one of the hardest things to do.

Kinda shocked me but I'm glad to get an update on Hide. We never get enough updates from past Ayu/Namie dancers.

actually there are a lot of local languages (African, Latin/South American/Australian) that have a 3rd gender that is neither male or female.

In many languages, there are gender neutral pronouns. In Chinese if we're referring to someone, we say "ta" which could mean he, she or it.
I think a country in Europe recently (within the last 5 years) decided to add a gender neutral pronoun to their language. English could also add one if they felt like it (come on Oxford Dictionary). Homophobic isn't the right word to use though. That word describes people more. Where is Cory when you need her?

English has "it". It's just that we have such strong connotations attached to the word where we tend to only think about things and not people when using it.
And yeah, there ARE other gender categories. They just weren't ever talked about. I guess Intersex would be the biggest "other" category here. And there's so much debate over what exactly that means, and how we can even apply it. It reminds me of the case of Caster Semenya, the athlete from South Africa, who was almost stripped of her records after a gender test found her to be closer to the of a male? Many people identified her as intersex because of this, even though she, herself, still felt that she was a woman. I think they later used a different gender test to say that she was a woman. There are tons of cases like this...People just don't talk about them so much. Moral of the story. Gender and identity are much more complicated than most people are used to understanding, and we shouldn't have to put identity into specific boxes with certain labels. Every individual is going to be different. Which is why, personally, I always leave it up to them to decide, what they want to be and how I see them.

Physical gender: Male or Female Psychological gender: Male or Female Sexual orientation: straight or gay You can have any combination of those 3, so, even if Hide for example changed her sex to become a girl, she can still be into girls... Her case is not album how she feels about others, but how she feels about herself. The prejudice name on this case would be "transphobia". It's not considered to be an mental illness or something cuz only stuff that hurt the person themselves and people around them can be considered such (that's why homossexuality can't be considered an illness either). And neutral pronouns are useful cuz not everyone is either male or female, the most rare it is, you have a lot of people who are in between, this is called intersex. On this cases, usually the person stick to the role of one of the 2 genders, but it's difficult to apply one gender since childhood to those people because it's not uncommon for them to grow up and discover they identify with the other gender. |

Thanks everyone for replying to me respectfully. I really am ignorant when it comes to a topic such as this, which can be touchy, so I'm careful not to cause offense. Thanks for the answers, it really enlightened me.
