Just what the heck does Dejavu mean to you?

Kuu usually doesn't have discernible themes to her albums based on the titles (there are, of course, exceptions to this rule) but one of them that always confused me is Dejavu. Based on the cover it just looks like an explosion of random stuff -- vaguely Alice in Wonderland-themed things along with Willy Wonka trippiness. Her live tour for the album is equally a hot mess of strange but fun looking things that basically make her seem like a candy shop-running madame and -- look, I don't get it, but it's a fun show.

I bring up Dejavu specifically because with her other albums I don't usually have as much confusion, but this one I'm just like... wha? Even the title doesn't stick with the sugary diabetes-inducing theme.

Should I even be thinking about this at all? ._.

Let it be known that I think the album's fun, and I'm in no way ragging on Kuu here. I just wanted to know your thoughts :3 And if there's other Kuu albums whose titles you think are random and don't really fit the albums in question (UNIVERSE is a candidate here), feel free to mention them.

I try not to think about it too hard tbh lol

I think it's just supposed to be like a bunch of trippy things. Alice in Wonderland is like tripping on shrooms sometimes, you know?

Like I said...don't think about it too hard. Koda's about having a good time...or bawling your eyes out cause your boyfriend died.

Kuu's own words on why:

GC: The title of your album released this month is “Dejavu”. Why did you choose that title?

KK: I decided upon the name because the album is full of original songs that have a familiar feel to them. The phrase is in French, and a friend told me that for her, ‘deja vu is when even though there’s been pain in the past, there still exists pain that must be overcome’. So after playing back the album, the name seemed to fit.

imo I did get the familar vibe from this album but like a better quality of her past albums and hits, I dunno but the album cover was like a homage to the feeling of wanting to go back with all the clocks and fairytale things

Two things:

1. The epic pop diva

2. Kumi snatching the english union jack look from Ayu.

imo the best concept she ever gave to an album was in feel my mind, when she decided upon the ero-kakkoii style. The covers, the style of songs, the shoot, everything there was to show us the path she was taking. Wish that album had a tour, I'd die to see what she could have done.

TRICK also had a good concept imo Almost all songs have a dark and mysterious feeling.

JAPONESQUE also had a good one, but I find it pretty ironic that she wanted to show the power of Japanese music but the main part of the songs there had western demos lol

Black Cherry is the worst one in concept. It doesnt even make sense. The album shoot is terrible, the tracklist is a mess and the tour had NOTHING to do with the album. I mean, what do black cherries have in common with pirates and mermaids?

Black Cherry tour is epic, even if it doesn't fit. Maybe Back Cherry is the ship, like the Black Pearl? Except hers is cherry 'cause its Kumi and you know all the kinds of things she be poppin'.

I think she said about Japonesque that it was supposed to show the world that Japan isn't just about kawaii J-Pop, that they can make music that can compete on an international level, not just K-Pop. So, some songs are serious J-Pop and other are Western for that reason. To showcase both aspects of the Japanese industry.

I actually think Black Cherry's concept was perfect (it's my absolute favourite album of hers). It still had that ero-kakkoii style she created with feel my mind, but it was a bit sexier, even a bit more intimidating. To me the idea of a black cherry is something sinister yet posing as something sweet and innocent. To me, this fits completely with the idea of pirates and mermaids because mermaids can easily be linked up with sirens, who pretty much were the bane of sailors because of their enticing voices, and pirates aren't as awesome as they're glamourised to be. They were some terrible bastards lol.
