...except that she's known as an urban R&B artist. I mean. Does it really matter what's in her actual album?

But hey, not saying that Japan isn't racist too. Cause they are.

I not into CK at all, but to be fair, even if she released the most popular kind of music in Japan (and considering she released r&b albums between Utada's First Love and Distance, she actually did released the most popular kind of music), she never really had a chance for being half-black. Japanese love their people to be pure japanese, the children of the dragon god.

That's great but guess what? Britney Spears is #1 on US iTunes right now. You may have your own opinion but America and the rest of the world doesn't agree with you.

I'm not sure if "has-beens" is the term I'd use for most of these For me, a has-been is someone who will keep trying to replicate their previous level of success even if its obvious it won't happen.

Like people have said, Hilary Duff seems to be happy enough to settle down with her family and isn't worried about doing music/movies. The amount she charges for an appearance is probably because she isn't really interested in making any, and if she gets asked to then, well, that another $500,000 towards her family being financially stable in the long-term I was never really into her music or anything, but I kind of respect her in that she seems to want to raise her kids like a normal mother.

I can see the AAR heading into has-been territory...in one way, I think its normal for them to have a couple of hit singles to break into the mainstream, then just put out albums for their fanbase rather than trying to get another hit single. But at the same time, their last 2 albums have had poor reviews (from what I've heard I'm no fan either) and they still seem to think they can put out music that the mainstream will eat up. I feel they're stuck in 2004 and don't realise that people have moved on.

I'm not so sure about Avril. As people have said, the whole punk-version-of-Britney-for-angsty-teenagers was only gonna last for so long (I'm surprised it lasted so long tbh). I think she realised that she needed to put out music that was definitely more pop than what she was doing in 2002-2004 (more pop-punk/rock) to stay in the mainstream, which is why we got TBDT. Yes, Girlfriend did really well and some other singles also did decently but I think the problem was her image. If she was gonna do a pop album like that she shouldn't have stuck with that tired rebel teenager look. Goodbye Lullaby was all over the place for me. She was putting out generic pop singles but then the rest of the album was a snooze-fest...and then she had a dark cover that made me think it was gonna be a real rock album or something reminscent of her first two albums. Her albums still sell decently but I don't think anyone cares about her anymore, and the main reason being that she looks like she's stuck in 2002 (I mean, she's 28 and getting married again and yet she still has the same image as when she was 17 ffs). With her next album I think she really needs to reinvent her self if she really wants a comeback; noone I know can take her seriously, and my friend who used to be the BIGGEST Avril fan for years and saw her live several times was so disappointed when she perfomed on the X Factor (last year I think). As well as being an awful perfomance she didn't even look like she was enjoying it.

And for the former Mr. Britney Spears...just sounds desperate lol.

Britney isn't a has been, in her last 'era' she had a #1 album and 4 top 10 singles (2 of them being #1 [Hold It Against Me and her feature on Rihannas 'S&M']) and sold a total of 17 million records in that era total. She currently has a single at #12 and it hasn't even peaked yet.

I don't think you could consider Madonna a has been either, her singles didn't do so hot but her album did sell 1.6 million 3 decades into her career. She also had the highest grossing tour of 2012!

Christina is a has been, for sure. Her last two albums haven't even topped 1 million and her most recent one peaked at #7. She hasn't had a top 10 single since 2008 and the lead single off of her album only went #34 despite her gig on The Voice giving her ample promotion. Her last solo #1 was 13 years ago as well.

What a strange list. There's so many people that bask in the spotlight, it's hard to tell who's a 'has been' and who's not, because one day you are one, and the next you get a gig that catapults you to new-found stardoom. Paula Abdul is a good example (albeit probably a dated one by now). Some of the things they write there are just straight wrong: Avril has had a big success with Girlfriend and Best Damn Thing, and last time I checked Hilary Duff didn't really have "a few successful albums a decade ago", she's had two CDs released that were of any significance, I'd say...
