I;m not here to make a list like this, but I was reading a reason why BTW didnt fully live up to expectations (a 18 to 24 week album charter)
one reason was that they released like 5 songs from the album BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED and therefore became stale. I was thinking that the japanese market would love this kind of promotion lol.

I never understood American promotions, first an album and then during the year they release single songs from this album, they give the whole thing and then ask people to buy it again, and somehow it works... no idea how. Maybe because of the remixes or sth but I saw singles with no remixes just the song and I was wondering what's the point (beside robbing collectors).

Well, in North America, its more like a lead single before the album is released first. Secondly, a single is released along with the album. Lastly, they release some songs to promote the album after its release.

And different people feel differently about it. Some like the North American way, because it makes the rest of the album a surprise. Others don't want to invest money because they may not like the songs, or they listen to the whole album before follow-up singles, and they are just annoying to hear on the radio. Some people like the Japanese way better because it gives a change to know more or less what going to be on the album before buying. Others think it makes the album less exciting, when all the good songs have been released already, plus the release of the album promotion song. Album tracks tend to be weaker, or less public friendly.

On the USA the focus is on selling the album, not the singles... So, the singles are there to show people a glimpsy of the new release of the artist, and not really on its own.

That's why singles sold pretty badly there until digital singles started to grow popular... Once digital singles became relevant, the singles are still aimed to sell the album, but people, casual listerners in general, can buy the songs they enjoy separately without buying the whole album, so, it's not rare that the album biggest single sell far better than the album.
