i consider a vocal great if the singer sounds better live than on the recorded studio version. There's not many that can do that, sadly... With Ayu it's hit or miss, same with Namie i think, she's usually on the safe side with songs (i mean if I, random girl with no lessons can sing her stuff it's really not something super complicated and let me tell you i can't do Ayu's at al lol). To me from what i have heard the only person who can pull of live perfectly and sound better than on any record is KOKIA. That girl is gifted. But i love Namie and Ayu regardless cuz there are times when they blow me away with their performances. And in general i enjoy their vocals a lot.

Utada has very specific voice, i never was a fan of it, and i feel like lots of people might not like it, cuz it's very different and odd, i do enjoy some songs, but it always sounds so forced to me and unnatural, i dunno.

Yeah, I'm surprised Ayaka isn't listed...

Sometimes it is not debatable because it's obvious but most of the time it's just a matter of tastes ! You know sometime people don't dissociate beautiful tone/voice and the technical view ! For exemple a lot of people really like Utada's voice because she is beautifull (I like it) but in a technical point of view Utada is not so good ! but it's just an exemple we can argue for most of these names in this ranking except few who are actually amazing like Ayaka Hirahara !

Utada's recent performance of Goodbye Happiness is really well-done, in my opinion. I have always thought that she has a very wonderful voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFkvLN9pt-k Here is the video I was talking about.

Kremlin Dusk is a very challenging song! (not to mention it turned out the stage was made out of cedar wood, which she is entirely allergic to.)

I think the truth about this all, like mizuki-7 stated, is that it's a matter of taste. Utada's been very well trained since she was a child. I think that she has a fragile voice and should not push it too hard. So, the first portion of Utada United was a good idea, but I think it proved that she needs to not take on so much in one night! Some singers are just made that way.

I'm sorry for my Utada Hikaru rant just now. >.< I actually don't listen to much of her music anymore, but she was the singer that got me into Japanese music. So... I guess she inspires me a bit?

As for Ayumi Hamasaki. I loooooooved her voice when she first started off. I know a lot of people don't care for her old voice, but I find it to be so unique and amazing.

I'm starting to get used to her newer voice, but it's taking some time for me. I love her music so much, though!

Anyway. I definitely agree that singers are truly more exciting when their lives are better than their recordings. Though, being a nu metal fan, I have to learn to live with the fact that screamers can only do certain things with their voice when live... >.> (because of the preparation they have to do to hit certain notes...)

Yeap. I LOVE Hikki's voice, mainly her lower register that I find to be really sexy... But her technique is just plain bad, and unfortunately it shows a lot... The TV version of Wild Life is horrible and I really though the deterioriation of her voice had something to do with her hiatus.

Still, Hikki is my favorite musician ever and her discograpjy ***** on almost everyone else's.
