I know what they would like to be called and I know what I still think of them as.

So I just use gender neutral pronouns. Not to be offensive, but to stay out of the "labels" and "what is it?" conversations.

Which seems to be where I find myself right now.

It's weird how gender neutral pronouns in english can be offensive.
If you really dont wanna use a gendered pronoun, for the sake of being respectful, I guess you could say "this person", like how japanese uses "mono" and "hito".
Person is also neutral and it will not cause any offence (it isnt really a pronoun).

"Not knowing what to call them" is a rather strange excuse since, you know, she transitioned to female, and historically females are referred to as 'she'. There really shouldn't be any confusion beyond that, regardless of how you think of her.

If you absolutely cannot bring yourself to call her by a female pronoun, I'm friends with a few trans people who are fine/insist on being referred to as 'they'. It certainly comes off better than 'it'.

She is a transgender woman, transgender women ARE women, which means that she is a she. So you don't offend people next time, if you know that they are transgender you then will know how to refer to them.

I'm not going to make a big deal out of it, but it is not about if she looks better as a guy or as a girl, it has to do with how she really feels and obviously she felt like she was born in the wrong body, hence the transition. It would be dumb if people had sex changes because of their appearance. She looks the happiest that I've ever seen her in here, and that's what matters.

I think the best approach is: If you don't know, ask. It may be difficult to do so in this specific situation, but I think a transperson appreciates someone who asks what gender pronouns he or she prefers, rather than someone who uncomfortably beats around the bush. I don't think it's an uncommon question; it's just all in the tone. If you're coming from a place of compassion, that'll come across.

I think this issue comes down to whether or not you respect an individual's right to self-determination. In this case, it's the right to self determine gender identity and expression. From what I understand, you don't respect that right. At the very least, your own comfort levels trump another person's right to determine who he or she is as a person. That's fine, I guess. I just can't agree with you.

Coming from personal experience, when someone "misgenders" me, that person--in one word--denies everything I have done, all the nonsense, ignorance, and discrimination I have had to put up with in terms of my transition. So it may not be a big deal to you, but the decision to use "it" or "he" instead of "she" stings. It doesn't matter how many times I hear it; it always gets under my skin.

By choosing to use gender neutral pronouns, haven't you directly participated in the "labels" and "what is it?" conversation? I don't think it's possible to stay out. With every person you meet, you make the decision to call that person "he," "she," or "it."

I don't know if she would like this kind of attention... the most interesting thing about having her around is that she is basically one of the girls. There's no label, no glittery announcement or whatever, she is just there being someone of the gender she identifies with. And even if I can't talk by trans people, as I'm not one myself, I believe by some stuff I read this is pretty much what they want.
