digipacks are generally lighter than jewel cases, hence saves on transportation costs. however, digipacks are easier to be damaged so it trades off the transportation costs.

Trying buying a CD that comes in a digipack and a whole lots of leaflets, booklets, lyrics sheets and what not jammed into it.
Not fun. It goes everywhere when you try to open it to get the CD. -_-" And I have to keep that Gackt CD in the original wrapper because the booklet keeps falling out......... |

Don't ever spill anything on them, either. x_x I ruined my tori amos "to venus and back" album like that.
Digipacks are actually a trademarked term, not just a word like "jewel case." the company that invented them easily sold the idea to record labels that wanted to save money on shipping and production (paper is alot cheaper than a mostly plastic case, after all), and then record labels jacked up the prices on CDs with this packaging, calling them 'collectable" (and alot of times they were... limited versions of albums would be released in digipack form, making them very ooh-aah among cd collectors). Now that the CD collecting market has died over the last few years, everyone just sees digipacks as cheap. They're really common now too, nothing special about them.
