An NYC gay magazine called NEXT interviews UTADA.

Here's the interview posted up on the livejournal of the editor himself. http://www.livejournal.com/users/nayrb7/381377.html

thanks for the article, the thing that she told her staff (from the first question) made me raise my eyebrows, though. Too bad they don't talk about how her album sold haha :B

I don't think it's meant to be taken negatively. I mean, at least there's an audience, and it might get better with the release of "Exodus '04".

An interesting read, thank you very much. =)

To be appealing to groups of people instead of being universal at once. Sounds like she's going through the edges instead of hitting the center....I think that's what thejadedangel wanted to mean. I kinda think like that, but well if it works it's all fine! I just hope the affirmation that gay ppl are indeed liking her is true because that could be a first step for her sales to boost.

Uh....not the gay bit. Just saying about the lesser known newspapers out there. Before you saw her in huge bits like Washington, Times, etc. I'm just saying it's much lower than before.

Geesh. People. Don't jump to conclusions just cause it's a gay mag.

I <3 gay people. and I <3 ImpactBreaker cause he knew what I mean. :hug

At least she still gets publicity that way, so it's not at all that bad. Better in the sense that like what Impact said, at least she can garner a strong fanbase in the gay community before moving on.

Maybe it was my phrasing, but I never intended it to mean it any other way else. Sorry about that.

nice to hear that atleast she is getting recognized by a group of people
and words of mouth to mouth and slowly can build up a mainstream fanbase in the US
good luck Hikki

THAT'S what got me grrr'd up. Cause I was never saying "bleh gay people" and that person took it it as so just cause it was a gay mag .

I like that she's getting recognition in ANY way right now, but I'm sure if it were japan, Utada would never have to go around the fringes to appeal to the main audience. I'm sure it frustrates her somewhat.

OT: Didn't she go to a gay bar with Fukada? I thought she did ... in Japan anyways.

Baah, ok, ok I misunderstood your post, but in my defense, it could have been more specific. Anyway, just to point out, LOTS of successful artists in america have interviews and what not with lesser known gay mags. I guess it's trying to appeal to a sub or underground culture. jennifer lopez -(cringe)-, kylie minogue, dannii minogue, madonna etc. The gay scene's very marketable.

haha, the second my friend heard this song he knew it would be popular on the scene, with lyrics like "baby there's a devil...jealous angel deep in side meeeeeeee"
