Maybe you just don't like her voice, plain and simple.

You don't have to force yourself to get into Otsuka just because other people do.

Her third full length is coming up on the 14th of December, if you feel like buying her new music.

she's sings differently on many tracks anyway...
like on Sakuranbo and Happy Days and other peppy songs, she uses a really cute voice.
But on softer songs like Planetarium, Neko ni Fuusen or Sensu she actually really sings, and can sound lovely.
I'm not a big fan of her voice myself, but I tend not to mind too much as her music can be terribly infectious.

The first Otsuka Ai song I heard was "Happy Days" when it came out. I loved the promo photos, so I checked out her website and listened to the clip. I nearly died; I thought she was a 1-girl Mini Moni.

But then I was in Tokyo when "Daisuki Da Yo." came out, and I fell in love with the song. Her voice sounded completely different. When I found out she writes and composes all her stuff, too, I respected her a lot more and looked deeper into her music. Her uptempo songs do tend to be too cutesy and crazy for me most of the time, but I can still appreciate them. Her ballads, though, are wonderful. "Daisuki Da Yo.", "Kingyo Hanabi", "Sensu", and "Cherish" are all great.

I think you just need to listen to a variety of her stuff (as with any artist) to really appreciate them. Ultimately, she just might not be for you, but you'll at least know from experience rather than writing her off.

First of all you need to get used to her voice. When I first listened to her I thought that her voice was simply awful and chucked the song aside. (It was pretty voice btw)

However I do suggest you watch her pvs because they do bring more colour to her music. And also you just might not like her. Her voice does sometimes get to hurt my ears as much as I love her.

I first heard the Kingyo Hanabi sample on her site, fell in love, bought Kingyo Hanabi (CD+DVD) and LOVE PUNCH (CD+DVD). Then I fell in love some more.
