LOL I don't think so, I think she did well. Most people in AHS prefer the female japanese artists over the male ones. In Japan it seems like the opposite happens (there's simply a fever over boy bands and male artists). Even in her peak days, ayu was always far behind masle groups like CHEMISTRY and EXILE.
Mika Nakashima was the best selling female artist (we can't really be sure whether it was her herself, or the sucess of NANA, which is a very famous japanese series in Japan at the moment so it could be getting a ride in that fact, not to mention HYDE's name is printed because there's his collaboration on that single) and ayu was the second one with STEP you/is this LOVE? a single that really wasn't advertising anything (except for maybe taking a ride on japanese people's favorite song from MY STORY "my name's WOMEN"). Utada didn't even make it to the top 20, and I can't even say other famous jpop female artists there

Too bad 'Sakura' isn't #1. That song really deserved it. Sad how there isn't one million selling single at all...

Honestly, I think 'my name's WOMEN' really helped the STEP you single, the 'making of' on MTV probably helped it alot too. Hate to say it, but I think sex appeal really sells her music better.

STEP you sold well because it was a double A-side (of which both tracks were fabulous) and that the DVD came with 3 new PVs, all of which also amazing.

Btw, Don't forget Benni K. Their Dreamland single takes the #1 spot for female artists excluding the NANA success. Ayu did win for the solo artists though ^_^

Also... if seishun amigo was released one week earlier it would've been the only 1 million unit selling signle for 2005. *sigh*

You're not the only one. I'm bored beyond belief with ORANGE RANGE and I don't know why Japan is so insane over them.

& sold 591,481 and not 1 million. H did sell a little over 1 million.

THen I guess Ayumi Hamasaki, NANA and Ai Otsuka are the top female artists of the year. Since bands are the top of pop right now I think it's a good achievement of ayu. She's the top female idol still, many years after her debut.

Seishun Amigo is still at the top of the charts this week. It'll be this year's million seller, apparently.

Err, nope. Where are you getting your data? Saleswise, during her peak days, Ayu sold MORE than both Chemistry and Exile in terms of total units. That's why she was best-selling artist of the year in Japan for 2001, 2002, and 2004. Chemistry and Exile were never close. They were the ones "far behind".

Mika Nakashima isn't the best-selling female artist of this year. In terms of singles sold, Ayu is still ahead of her. Ayu is still ahead of everyone else, as a matter of fact.

Hikki hasn't released a good single since her Deep River days. Colors was good, but the second track Simple and Clean was just plain terrible.

From oricon. I didn't check it right now, but I have a good memory, and at around 2001-2002 CHEMISTRY would top ayu in terms of units sold. However, ayu had far much more releases than them, that's why she actually sold more units but if you single out in a single release, that would be a different story. Their album sold far much more than I am... when both had been released.

I think in addition to the other reasons stated, the reason STEP you sold more was because of the way it was promoted. She's trying that strategy again with B&D/Pride, that is promoting both songs equally more or less.

^NANA is a manga (i think) turned into a movie n nakashima mika plays the lead role, NANA. n due to the movie's success at the box office, n also since it is a famous manga, sales for mika's n yuna ito's singles have gone up.
