In the end, the message is optimistic as much harsher as the scenario might seem.

And reading the translation through other sources such as wataru the song sounds a lot more about being confident and having faith and hope, despite the bad moments (maybe even the title means something like caring less for all the problems and looking for the future rather than the past, I dunno).

The PV shows the opposite: the angel has a last hope but dies in the end, so the message through the PV is that even hope dies in the end, showing ayumi crying and jailed in a cage. THat's totally different from the whole message of the song.
Don't want to turn this into a Whatever discussion, so this will be all I say about the topic. The lyrics for Whatever are pretty desolate throughout and while there are a few lines of hope here and there - to me it seemed like false hope and that Ayu knew it was false hope but was trying to convince herself otherwise. That's why the PV is the way it is, it does reflect the lyrics.

All I can say about the BLUE BIRD PV is that the colours are excellent! Rich, vibrant, I think it's so beautiful! If only fairyland had accentuated its colours and made them equally rich, it would be a perfect summer PV! But still, nonetheless, the BLUE BIRD PV made me smile because I think what Ayu's trying to convey is to relax, have fun and enjoy this coming summer! It's kind of a wish for people living in the big cities (they pretty much have no proper beach to go to that's really pretty and with clear skies and blue waters) so I think she expressed it perfectly in this PV! It's really relaxing I think, it doesn't try too hard to show something like "C'mon, let's have fun for the summer" and it does it through very simple basic scenes like having fun with your friends and probably doing some stupid things like throwing people overboard. I thought it was a really enjoyable PV and very smoothing on the senses.

However (yes, there's always the "however"), as what people have said, the summer theme is WAY overused. Anymore Ayu doing things on the beach and that PV is officially considered thrashy. Ok, maybe not so if there was a portal and she got warpped into it or some other weird thing. But I'm quite tired of the beach already. Does summer always have to do with beaches and lots of fun? Probably for the city dweller. But it could always be getting herself involved in something like Thailand's Water Festival or even Spain's Tomato Festival. It could be just getting overseas and participating in something. I think that would come out to be a fantastic summer PV as opposed to more beach, more sand, more water and clear blue skies. No doubt, it expresses freedom, but I think it could really be conveyed in some other way. I don't really mind summer PVs not having that much thought to them but they must be logical and convey a definitive emotion across.

(And I was hoping to see a blue coloured bird somewhere in the PV but I thought it might have clashed with hitomi's GO MY WAY so it wasn't around)

Still, it's a very very relaxing PV. It has the most beautiful shot of Ayu in a PV I think, the part where she's on the boat and looking out to the horizon with the blue sky and sea in the background (Scenes that coincide with the last shot). That just looks amazing!

I like it too when she's by herself at the white sand platform in the ocean. It looks pretty and no distractions from her URGH dancers.

Regarding Ayu's dress on the hill, ok, it's quite weird, but I think it comes off fine. It's quite raw in the sense it's stitched together with multiple cloths and stuff but I think yup, it's fine. It's more of Ayu that's the problem. I don't like her hair.

Ayu's dancers appear TOO much in her PVs and I think we can already recognise them as celebrities in their own right. In this PV, I HATE it when they get very flamboyant and sometimes I think they're even vying for camera space with Ayu but when they're having fun with her, it's OK. They're really distracting though and I would appreciate a PV without them like alterna (Geez, that PV is one her recent BEST works ever!).

Now for my biggest problem ... EDITING! Did anyone notice this?

For live performances it's understandable but for PVs! I'm annoyed by the lack of meticulous editing there is in the PV. It's the only editing problem present though, fortunately. That's all I have to say for the PV.

Overall, 8.5/10! It's amazing colours takes you by breath with a very relaxing atmosphere and mood for the entire PV but the beach-themed idea has got to go.

I'm quite amazed that you can see the camera-man's shadow on her dress... i bet it was probly one or two seconds in the pv.

Nonetheless... next time they should cut out the dancers.. pls... no more dancers. I feel like the dancers are part of "ayumi hamasaki", and that's quite creepy..

"ayumi hamasaki" really is like a band name XD vocalist, band, dancers

Anyways, I liked the PV, I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it has a nice relaxing feel to it, a nice PV to watch during exam times !

Yes, I agree. We'll trap her in a cage and drop her off next to Mt. Fuji. xD

Yeah, kind of like how Pat Benatar was ultimately a band, but with her name. I've thought that was how Ayumi was for a few years now.

The few lines of hope are actually what the lyrics focus in (ayu might be frozen in her sadness but she awaits for the sun to shine into her - she's being optmistic, if the song were pessimistic she would just expect more darkness to drown herself into). The fact a song mentions sadness and desolation doesn't mean it is not optimistic (a sad person can be optmistic if they actually think things will get better). For instance I really think Endless sorrow has optmistic lyrics (how she talks about if they both join their strength they will make it, even though the song talks about everything being lost and having such a title. You can't tell there's false hope just by the lyrics of WHATEVER themselves, the arrangements of the song + the PV are the ones that makes you realize that. That's the reason why I consider the lyrics to be optmistic and the PV to be the opposite (and why I said I think the song -as a whole, the lyrics+ arrangements+PV- was created as an irony instead)...and also reason enough why WHATEVER has always been my most favorite ayu PV ever.

I got the false optimism just from the lyrics alone before I ever saw the PV. : That's probabaly because I see the more pessimistic side of things first though. Endless Sorrow on the other hand IS an optimistic song.

i like the PV to a certain extent!! i like the colours and scenery and it really brought out the summer feel. lovin' it!

but they focused too much on her dancers. i dont really like that. and also nothing much besides them playing with water and eating lobsters.

the making of BLUE BIRD will be them eating and playing. lol. so i think i will not buy CD + DVD jacket B.

It is so irritating~

I like the vibrant colours and the happiness in the PV; fairyland, to me, makes me feel that the happiness is fake and forced.

IMO, it's happy, it's nice, but I probably won't watch it again. As others have said, she's used the the summer song on the beach theme for the last 2 summer songs, not including this one. I dunno...it just seems kind of bland to me; I wish she would have had a different director.

Speaking of which...the same director for "Beautiful Fighters"? oh... ;_;

Though i have downloaded it hours ago, I just watched it.
The py has successfully given out summer-happy feelings. But it also reminds me of fairyland. So I think this will make me purchase the version with Beautiful fighters making instead - unless it's worst.

I haven't seen it untill now, and allthough it's not very "deep", no PV has ever made me smile throughout it so much as this did. It's so happy. ANd there IS a story line. So even though it's not really a "good PV", I ended up liking it a lot. To me the whole point of art is to give some impression, emotion. THis managed to do that without having quirky details and the like. So all in all I like it a lot.
