[article] When the kids lost the music

Excerpt:
Quote:
Worldwide CD sales were down this year, including in Japan. Part of that is because of Internet downloading, of course, but it's not simply down to that. Young people aren't interested in music anymore, and it's having an effect on concert-ticket sales.

The Rock In Japan Festival [which took place this year in August in Ibaraki Prefecture and attracted 47,000 fans per day over three days] might have sold out, but tickets for individual shows are on the decline. In short, I'm not optimistic about the future of music.

Interesting article; weird how the younger generation isn't interested anymore. Maybe too lazy?

I think tickets can tend to cost too much and in general peoples spending habits have changed.

I used to always go to small concerts and have fun but in my experience people at concerts can be really rude and it just ruins the whole expierence. Here, kids go to concerts when they're high.

It's not so weird that some people aren't interested in music. My step-brother has never listened to music at all, and he's 18.

It's probably being replaced by video games. o_O (And no, I didn't read the article)

i can understand why people aren't as interested in music anymore.

a lot of the mainstream music out there is crap.
finding anything that is actually really, really good can be very difficult.

I don't really think that there losing much interest in music. I think the main reason is still from file sharing/CD burning etc etc.

^ I think they are. Most of my friends are barely involved in artists like we on this forum are.

the world's economy is in a MAJOR slump. It's so bad everybody's actually trying to work together to make money. It's like whereas ten years ago Artist A and Artist B would never come near each other; they are now collaborating like crazy together.

I guess kids just don't like music anymore because it's agrivating. What you want to see more of on TV doesn't get shown. You can't get through on the radio...or they just don't have the song you wanna hear on file. And I think record execs/big brothers are just a little too controlling. They should let the viewers & listeners decide who and what they want to hear and see more of. Twenty years ago it was good to sell 30,000,000 copies of your album in the United States alone...Now singers can barely crack the 1,000,000 point in one month. Perhaps, the music industry should take different approaches to their audiences. Find other ways to reach people, you know?

Well today's kids certainly aren't as eager or thirsty to find out more about the songs/singers they like compared to previous generations from what I see. They listen to the radio, find a song that they (or everybody else) likes, and put it on repeat on their iPods without giving a second thought as to reading up about the singer or the lyrics of the songs. Today's teen music listeners are probably more concerned about keeping up with the latest music trends and being "in fashion" than actually getting to know what kind of music they personally like and also listening more of other artistes with the same (much less different) sound.

And I also think that downloading through the Internet has quite a bit to do with the drop in sales for concerts and CDs definitely, simply because so much can be downloaded making it pointless to actually attend a concert or buy albums to support their favourite artistes for a lot of young people. This leaves behind the supposedly more "enthusiastic" or "hardcore" fans to keep the industry running.

Keep in mind that I'm using generalisations, and that there will always be a few exceptions here and there who like to buck the trend.

seriosuly, i would never have been in the music scene if not for my friend who sent me Jolin's "Shuo Ai Ni" 5 years ago...it was then i started to listen more and BUY CDs...then Ayu came along and i underwent another change..

if not for that, i dunno what i will be doing now. But of coz, music should be at least some form of a person's life i feel...even listening occasionally is ok...but NOT INTERESTED?!?!..hmm
