We are talking about a country where 11/12 year old girls appearing in bikini photoshoots is common.

Also, the western-inspiration has to decline. I became an Ayu fan because I was tired of all this dim American music and entertainment. I'd hate to loose Ayu to the rath or monotony in America. She shouldn't even ATTEMPT an English album. It would do nothing but hurt her career. She'd be known as that "hot asian girl" or "you know that chinese singer?". Her music won't go to far in America either. Asian singers aren't too popular except in Asia and other countries that are NOT America. The only way she can make it is if she throws away all her style and becomes another lamb to the shameless hip-hop genre, like everybody else.
Not necessarily replace her. Take BoA for an example. Some people label some new singer as the "next BoA". What they mean is that he/she will be like BoA, where they cross the cultural barriers and sing in different languages and go international etc. It doesn't mean BoA's career is over nor does it mean that they are actually going to "replace BoA". Same thing for Ayu (only with a different meaning).

I think it would be kind of hard to stop the western-influence since the US is the largest music industry in the world, and is probably the most recognizable (maybe even most popular?) and add to that, Ayu is in love with the US, so yeah, I think it's kind of hard. But, I don't think she (or avex) have had an intention to make a US debut at all.

THe difference is the air the mercahndise gives. Remember someone saying that Ai Otsuka has more male fans than Koda? So does Morning Musume have for sure. Cute is to some extent a bigger turn on it seems than humping a wine bottle.

Yes, but being cute to attract middle-age men isn't a new thing, idols have been doing this since the beginning of the Idol industry. But Koda Kumi is the first artist to have a really sexy image, no artist has done that before (in the 80s, Honda Minako was the "japanese Madonna" because she showed her bellybutton and that was VERY racy at the time).

Ayu's biggest competitor is HERSELF
that's right, HERSELF
After making amazing one-of-a-kind songs like M, SEASONS, etc
eveyone has high expectations for her
and as a highly respected singer like herself
she's gotta keep her game up constantly, or else the audience will be bored
lately her songs have been mediocre, and she is becoming a bit less popular
but i'm sure as the Queen of J-Pop, she can live up to her standards once again
and JEWEL sounds very promising
i agree with what your saying but yes. Ayu has set a too high of a bar for herself she needs to hook back up with HAL, DAI, and Bounceback go back to her roots to make awesome music again and even with ferry then she will be back where she was!!! i hope she is not becoming a seiko matsuuda too soon...........

Gosh, reading through this thread makes it sound as if Ayumi is on her death bed or something. Like some kind of deranged Ayu-cult or something. It's not that serious. The question is who is Ayumi's biggest competitor, not who is going to dig her an early grave

Seriously, some people here need to go on Ayu-timeout.

Well, a forum is for discussing.

Whether it's a deathbed, grave, or a question

^Oooookay? Now that was kind of creepy. I'll pray for Ayumi tonight. Are we going to have a mass burial for (miss)Understood once Ultra Blue surpasses it in sales? "Aaaaaah! Hikaru is taking Ayumi's place! Noooooooo!"

Yes like someone said you're taking it too literally...
FINE! Koda Kumi releases good music! Better?!
She writes a great amount of her lyrics... So what if she doesn't write all of it?! At least she writes it...

I don't see you having a problem with Namie Amuro or BoA not writing their own lyrics for their songs...

Er... Ayu's voice is far from unique... Her voice is the typical high pitched voice... High pitched voices are extremely normal in Japan...

Koda Kumi has a lower voice but she can handle both high and low notes... She has a rougher voice also so it makes her music more unique... Her voice is so distinct... You can definately tell its a Koda Kumi song by listening...

UNIQUE TO JAPAN! jeez... If you say Koda Kumi's image is like X-Tina...
Would you like a list of websites comparing Ayu to Madonna?!
Noone is unique nowadays... Everythings been done! Jeez...

Japan is an asian country... Asian countries are still very much male dominated.. Men are the head of the household...
The fact that Koda Kumi has this sexy and powerful image of a woman taking control doesn't exactly meet with what Japanese males are used to... That's why Ai Otsuka and MM's fans are male... They're cute... Nothing too unique..
Koda Kumi challenges this with her music and image... If you look at the Selfish PV, all the men are being kicked around and are crawling... Symbolising girls are dominating... That's why her fans are female... She is a role model for girls to be confident and to take control and stuff... That's why..

It's got nothing to do with humping or being cute...
If you're used to being dominating then you'd of course want someone submissive so you can still be in control... rather than someone who's confident and can take control... get it?

yes... I'm a Kumi fan... Why am I so crazy bout defending Kuu, coz I'm fed up with you nutcase Ayu fans and anti-Kuu bashing her because of 1 video clip or because of her image...

Seriously, there's gotta be someone around here to defend Kuu other wise this place would be filled with "Koda Kumi is a ****" or "Koda Kumi < Ayumi Hamasaki" threads....

ayu99persen.... *smiles nicely*.... i'll let you pass today

Actually, I think this place is a bit more pro-that person than pro-Ayu.. LOL

Just look at the official thread for it o_o I think that despite being called "AHS", more people are likely to jump on people who say negative things about that person who isn't Ayu.. :/ More negative things are said about Ayu here and are left un-argued, whereas a lot of the time, the person who isn't Ayu's ones just end up in arguments o_o

^I think that would be best. Even though it was a good question. I think some posters misinterpreted the question as "Who's Gonna Replace Ayu?"

And Terri, work on that black humor. I was just messin with ya
