Honestly, other than Namie, there's like... no one else from Ayu's generation in the top 20 album charts. I know she isn't doing as well as she used to, but I think a lot of artists who have been active since the late 90s like Ayu wished that they were still doing as well as she does.

It was her last week before the year ended that pushed her up to #20, putting Ayu in #21. I don't really consider her in the same category as anyone else since she's kind of... strange. (read: Utada had more than 7 million people as fans when she started off almost and as she "dropped" in sales, it was like barely anything. Even if she dropped by half with every album... 7 million -> 3.5 million -> 1.75 million -> 875k... which is basically how her sales progressed except for a million in there or two) Only recently has her popularity seemed to obviously dwindle in comparison with others in the industry.

Hikki was actually the indicator for the industry sales for her first few albums (First Love --> DEEP RIVER), and then her popularity declined a bit (at least in physical sales). It's just her latest best album was really a bomb with no reason. I think she and ayu may have more digital sales tho. Oh well at least they still hold strong compared to others like Mai K, Ringo, Misia, etc..

^^Dwindling popularity or not, she still beat Ayu, who with your same logic would also be considered dwindling. If this was Ayu and not Hikki btw, no doubt the 0 promotion would be pointed out and be used to defend the (lack of) sales, so let's all be fair here.
12 original albums and several Bests in and still beating out that many people? #21 yearly is still really good.

I can still wonder what can Ayu think in terms of rivalry between Utada & herself, don´t you think that Ayu got less success but a lot more work than Utada all this years?(at first I thought that Ayu was an workaholic, but now I think that is avex itselfs)...I mean, the launching speed of singles & albums is a lot slower than Ayu,but Ayu in 11 years of career has more albums and singles of a lot of artists(even Utada,I don´t know...).
The point is that the speed of albums & singles can make popularity & sales get down more quickly than other artists...but I am happy for now with the sales of the album(my last songs CD+DVD comes to me very soon...(+1Lovesongs oricon sales...xDDDD)

True, hikki has only 5 original albums and 2 best albums so far, with probly less than 25 singles. So ayu has done at least twice more than what hikki has. It's good to see that both can still have important place in the music industry today.

But I think that that showed hikkis decline In popularity is the fact that it was her last thing to ever be released till after her hiatus was done, things like those usually spike up sales a lot not so much the fact that it sold more thN Ayu so Ayu is not as popular its the fact that something like a compilation album with her singles plus 5 new songs significant promotion and her last thing to be possibly released should have sold a lot and it didn't in comparisson to what was expected. Even kuu released a compilation and a studio album in one and it sold like 50k more than Ayu s rnrc so it shows how Ayu has managed to hold on very well

I'm still impressed with LS sales so far, but does anyone know if Japan keeps records of legal downloading? I can't seem to find anything online yet... ;__;
Here's the official iTunes Japan page for the album: http://itunes.apple.com/jp/album/love-songs/id408615079 It's got some reviews on it although they don't seem to be positive ![]() Here's Ayu's main page, showing that Love Songs' songs are selling pretty well from all of her works ^^ http://itunes.apple.com/jp/artist/id73951471

Oricon doesn't count digital album sales.
I'm not sure how digital album sales are in general in Japan, but I do know tht iTunes is tiny. People generally grasp it as an example since we know it, but it only accounts for 10% of all digital sales. That's pretty pathetic compared to their market sgare in Europe or the US. |

The sales are great! We all know that CD sales dropped significantly each year so, seeing this figures is already good.
Thanks for the update.

Total sales' number is wrong. The total is 143 677.
The mistake comes from of yesterday's number

I didn't think it would drop that much. Oh well. Two more days it should sell around 30k more with some luck so that means the first week sales could be around 165-170k.

Friday always has the lowest sales, doesn't it?
Does she have any performances over the weekend? Hopefully that'll help if she does.

I dun think "Friday always has the lowest sales" is true anymore, at least after 2007. There are no obvious boost like what they used to have back in the early 2000s.
Anywayz, nice sales ![]()

A lot of the drop is the transition into digital downloads that Oricon still hates to track. In the US, it's wreaking havoc on some of the long-running stars... mainly because single sales are now starting to greatly determine a song's chart position, whereas airplay was originally the big deciding factor. I'm happy with that though... I've always felt that Japan got the CD-marketing bit right by having singles come BEFORE the album is even planned. Quote:
Like someone else, I strongly agree with the fact that I'm happy she's still around. I honestly don't care what her sales are at this point, but I do hope she has a few more platinum albums and maybe a few #1 singles left. Ayu is already established as one of the biggest singers in Japanese history... I'd be excited to see her make it even more difficult to knock her down after she is gone. Quote:
Sales reflect trends. I have to say though that quality is more important in Non-US markets. We'll buy any piece of crap CD here in the US... people still have to work a little for a record to be something in Japan. And if Ayu were truly concerned about money and fame, she would be attending the award ceremonies. If I remember correctly, she stopped several years ago. Quote:

Ayu will always have a fanbase. If people are still buying Matsuda records, Ayu is definitely long-term for sales. And I'm not sure new fans are really a desire... A lot of us who came around in recent years have backtracked through the years of Ayu that we weren't around for and now don't think as new fans. I first heard Ayu in 2006, but I know her music and career so well now, I think as a fan who was around for "poker face" would. Those fans are more important to any entertainer than the ones who might buy for popularity's sake. Quote:
