Well to a point you are right. She's not as popular as she had been in the past no matter how much some Ayu fans keep on insisting she's more popular than before. She's reached a peak in the "I Am..." era in 2002 and slowly started declining.

However I must say that this year might be different from the last since her newest single showed much more work than before especially in the PVs and how it relatively sold pretty well in especially since I've heard that there wasn't much advertising especially since Avex is busy trying to advertise younger singers. She won't go back to being ultra popular as she was but I think maybe she might show her talent is still as it was before. Who knows?

Since her last album in December she only released one single as in new material and it's almost been six months. From 1999 to 2002 she used to release a single approximately every two months. Then after 2003 her single releases got irregular and less. In 2003 and 2004 she only released 3 singles when before she released from 5 to 7 singles a year. So yeah you have a point to say she is fading. In my humble opinion I think Avex is trying to reduce its dependancy on Ayu (I saw it mentioned somewhere on an article on AHS, I think it was in 2003). Plus a singer can't stay ultra popular forever.

i think yeah she's rising again, after the "fall" of RAINBOW-A BALLADS she's definitely on top again this time, her songs are getting better IMO, the singles are like wow, and STEP you / is this LOVE is cool!

i hope she'll be on top again for long, like in the I am... period, *crosses fingers*

I don't think that she can reach her height of fame again, even though MY STORY was an awesome album. It's just difficult to get that popular again, once you've gone down. After all, what goes up, must also come down.

Anyhow, I hope that 2005 will be a good year for Ayu; I definitly hope it won't be a repeat of 2003.

Ayu is not rising, she's falling down! Young fans can't see that, but I do see. It's sad, but there's nothing we can do. She has been falling down more & more since 2002, and since 2004-the most. She's not rising! Don't you see? No new style, no new music-NOTHING! And too much rocky music-maybe she wants to change the style, but it's not the right tactics, because music now..it doesn't have any, how to say it right, soul and the right harmony, as it was in 2001 (Why do you think "A BEST" sold so much, huh?-harmony and really beautiful music, that's why!) or, even, in 2002 (popularity of Ayu grew up immediatly more, than it was: the reason for it is the same to "A BEST"). But now..Ayu is losing herself-that's my opinion.

but her voice is indeed changing a lot, we can compare with the concerts...but now it's powerful and being well-controlled,that's a great thing!

I really agree with you, but, your opinion is too extreme...we can't ask ayu too keep the same musicsytle all the time, she's trying to change herself as we see, time will tell.
All we have to do is be for her all the way. though I love "the past ayu" like you...

Ye-a, I know she must change! But you know, all this "is this LOVE?", "STEP you", "About you", "GAME"-they somehow sound the same to me, I don't know how to explain it right! I mean-the same construction, even the music is the the same for me! And I don't like it! Changing the style is good, but before doing this, Ayu, please think about it. I don't wanna` see Ayu-rocker! That will be awful, and she's using and turning into rock with a big power! And the music is heavy, sometimes too much heavy! Well, she used rock a little bit in "I am..." album, and I think that was the right way! But now-just rocky tunes, heavy tunes, it's not even called pop-music-it's called "light rock"...

Well, what did you expect? She is going to go down in the books. Hopefully she won't be featured on almost EVERY SINGLE EPISODE of PopJapan TV like the Gospellers! GAH! Those grandpas! XD..................

Well, but wouldn't it be better, if she changed her style into rock, but the rock would sound better, and had much harmony and hadn't the same construction and tunes, huh? No matter what, Ayu must change her style into another one, or, everything will be lost with the same rocky songs...
Cute Ayu's time has passed by, and WOMAN Ayu came out immediatly, and it's a normal process! But, maybe, still, she can keep up herself a big star? Still, she is, but the sales are going down, isn't it scary? Someone can say, don't look at the numbers, but how will you explain the fact, that when she was the most famous, "A BEST" sold over 4,000,000 copies, and Ayu get ranked 7th position is the "World's Famous Artists" poll? Of course, you can't be famous all the time, but I think Ayu has everything to be famous all the time! I think she is just tired, poor one.
I'm just trying to tell you, how many fans and support she had lost with her new image. I am not saying: "Don't change, don't have new style!" because it's impossible not to change, and everyone need changes. I'm just saying: "Ayu, ROCK THE ALL AGAIN!", but unfortanutely, I see, that she can't do this now.

Haha, I don't really think she's going too ROCK at all! She is to try and market a new phase in her career, that's my opinion, and I think she's doing it really well! Haha, as long she doesn't meddle around with J-Rap that's fine with me! OMG, I so can't imagine what would happen if Ayu starts to rap! (FYI, haha, I don't consider her "rapping" in Fly High, that was really good! It was more like talking with style!)

I think Ayu's soaring and coming back up again! I agree that she has got lots more styles to experiment with and haha, she needs a breakthrough song again once more! I do agree that some of her songs lack the X factor like M, evolution, SEASONS and Voyage! Haha, those which tunes are just so addictive!

Yup, she needs a song like that! Which I hope will be for the SHINOBI movie! Haha, but still, looking at fairyland and how everything's progressing, with her concerts and everything, I really think she's coming back up again and she's truly being herself this time round!

Remember how she said after INSPIRE, she felt like she could anything she wanted! Haha, that's what I call self empowerment! And I think her singles this year are truly great! She's working it out and she's enjoying it a lot! I think that's what truly matters!

Yeah, I think this year is kicking last years ass for Ayu. Step You sold more than any of the singles from last year. I also think the quality of her PVs took a downturn in 2004 - they weren't quite the same quality as the PVs from the Rainbow/Memorial Address era. But so far this year, all 4 PVs that she has released so far have been EXCELLENT and are really high quality. She is definitely on an upswing.

Anyone else got the same thought as me? ^^

I don't think that "MY STORY" was really a big comeback. It sold good, but not great. "STEP you/is this LOVE?" also got good sales. It was better than all of her singles from "forgiveness". But still, it wasn't great. BUT. "fairyland c/w alterna" seems to be somehow a big comeback. And let's not forget "HEAVEN", the theme for "SHINOBI" which is expected to be a HUGE movie. Maybe she'll get back to her older days. Maybe not. We should just be happy that Ayu still makes music for her fans.

I love the way Ayu is going right now with her music.
I remember in the Oricon interview with Ayu about the making of MY STORY she said she was tired of making obligatory songs like an energetic single for summer and a ballad for winter. But then on every single there's a much darker song like 'is this LOVE' and 'alterna' so she can still express her darker, maybe truer? self as well as satisfying Avex.

"Heaven" sounds great and will be a fantastic return to her roots...I love her ballads and I don't care what the sale figures are - it's so tough in Japan with more and more pop-acts each year...I still think Ayu's concerts are the best I've ever seen [be that on DVD] and her voice is so powerful nowdays [just watch any of her first concerts to compare]...as long as she's true to herself and producing the music she wants to make I'll listen to her.
