I think it's because of the mentioned "loudness wars". Record labels thought it would be a good idea to make the album as loud as possible, I guess.

yeah i definitely hear it. ayu's always has a professional sound, but the last two albums just weren't as perfect and clear as m(u). like the m(u) tracks have dynamics and morph throughout the song while Secret and GUILTY's songs are loud but stay pretty flat... and with the whole singles thing... probably they sound just a bit better because the tracks are mastered individually and then by the cd as a whole?... ayu probably had more time for the singles
xD and about the loudness war... it's so loud and overdone now that it's not even competing but more just cuz everyone else does it and that you have to in order for your songs to sound professional... pro's are told to make it louder so everyone else has to if they wanna sound like em... and i know this cuz i do it xD |

Part of it could be that she has Americans doing the mastering and stuff, so the stuff seems blah.. D:
The "Mastered at..." in the credits have been in New York or LA for the last two albums I think.
