Paternal, from the fathers side? I would actually doubt that, but if it really says so, that is a strong hint that Ayus father was Japanese, something that has been speculated so much about.

I would say it's from her mothers side, but extepan mentioned that it might say it's her paternal grandmother, which means she'd be from the fathers side. I find that weird.

all we know that, the grandma on that pic was the closest to ayu..
i think that's from her mother's mother..coz they all look alike..

I've seen that picture of Ayu's mother before, but definitely not the one with her grandmother. It's so cute to see them together because Ayu obviously loved her very much (as she expresses through the lyrics in "Who...") She looks like a very kind woman, and her hair color's pretty stylish

If this is the grandmother that raised Ayumi when her mother wasn't around I definitely hope she's Ayumi's mother's mother because if she's actually the paternal grandmother, that would be too much of a confusion. For me, at least. I'm sure by reading that topic by evolusean, that Ayumi's father must be of Caucasian descent.

i just wish that Ayu's mother told Ayu the things most people should know.i mean she never even knew her mother's real age.who here father was,and a whole bunch of other things.i guess it was easyer that way for the both of them,but i just thought Ayu should have had the right to know some of these things.her family had so many secrets.

That's true, but from what I understand it was quite mutual, neither of them talked to each other very much.
