Yes they always release earlier, due to New Year's being a big holiday in Japan (I believe everyone in Japan gets a few days off because it's the New Year holiday--not necessarily celebrated only on the first, IIRC).

there's only been one true happy song we've heard, which is glitter, everything else has been stronger and deeper in context

I really doubt it was her mother as I'm sure the press would have thought that, researched the death certificate, reported it, etc if it was true. I don't think it was Mika John as she is still young and if she had died by some sort of event like a cras, again it probably would have been reported seeing as she's the president of a company. She's probably thanking her as she's helping her through the grief as friends do.
