The people in my art class know about my admiration for Ayu. Once my friend brought her copy of MY STORY, that I brought her for her birthday, and played it throughout the art lesson. People were impressed.

I do get a lot of questions asked, like why do I like her music and how I got into her and where I get her CDs from.

Other than that people around school know me as the girl that listens to Japanese music.

well ive had various reactions from friends...for example,

my friend hunter: we were listening to Eminem on a field trip last year (she made me), so i decided to make her listen to Ayu...i played (miss) understood and kiss o' kill. she said she thought the music was cool and her voice was unique. But she mostly listens to Eminem and Kiss...so i dont expect her to fall in love with it.

this girl at school, paige: she didnt really like Ayu's music. She said it was cool but she prefered technoish music...(i was gonna make her listen to Lee Jung Hyun's Japanese stuff, but my battery died in my iPod)

my friend brett: he's a bit weirded out by my love for Asian pop, so its safe to say he doesnt like Ayu

my friend dalton: he doesnt like Ayu, but he did like Maki Goto's SOME BOYS! TOUCH.

this guy i dont like, Lucas: he saw the cover of Duty *my favorite album at the time* and called me something i dont think im allowed to say here. its really racist...

thoughts were generally negative, but its prolly cuz of the area i live in. I live in Southeastern Kentucky, where yu get exiled if yu'r against hunting deer and support the ASPCA.

You know... reading all those messages made me think of something, but I don't quite know how to explain it *deeeeeep sigh*

How do I say this? Because we listen to J-Pop we don't come along with the rest who are all listening to American music and who all have the same style...

does anyone get what I'm trying to say? -it's hard to explain-

well I don't really mind that people think that I am stupid because I LISTEN to J-Pop, I was always an outsider in school, I still remember the times I was getting bullied and I just fought back and the guys were scared of me XD

but I think because of that I am kind of open when saying to people that I love anime, videogames and I prefer listening J-Pop than American/German,etc music

I used to not tell people because it was embarrassing to me, but I became a little less concerned with my image and eventually started telling everyone she was my favorite singer. I embraced it and people didn't really care. No one could pronounce her name, one of my friends always called her "Ayumi Hamamaki" and I have another one who calls her "Ayumi Hamamsaki" because it was misprinted on the poster that came with LOVEppears. Still, my none of my friends that don't already listen to Japanese music really like anything by her. Most of them tend to like Namie or Koda Kumi better.

They don't care anymore xD I made such a huge fuss about her back then which got everyone annoyed but now she's just whatever to them. It pisses me off because she's such a brilliant artist, but you've gotta listen to most of it to truly recognize it. Even now to SOME extent she does things differently, a lil too bland though. I hope her new album blows meh away!~

Well, most people have told me "she's had surgery" which is the natural first reaction. The second being, her pitch is hecka high. And the last american-egocentric views "I don't understand this, I don't like it"

Yeah, I'm pretty embarrassed of letting people know about my Ayu obsession <.<...But I WILL tell some people that I trust. I guess you can't really blame them since it is pretty rare (in my community that is) to find someone who is not Asian who loves Japanese music...Everyone is too busy with American music (which makes sense xD). But I still love Ayu and I don't care what other people really think as long as it doesn't get passed around school and people start thinking I'm a weirdo
But yeah, luckily I haven't been in the predicament of having to show someone (who wasn't aware of my J-pop love) my music in mp3 yet...But I have American music in there too even though most of it is j-pop. But yeah, I guess you can say I kinda try to keep it on the low :3

That's awesome! I once used a line from 'End of the World' for this english assignment but I put 'anonymous' instead of saying who it was by xD

Apparently, I was voted 3rd weirdest person in my school. Yay.

I can only imagine what would happen if they knew I listened to a whole array of Asian artists, considering I'm not the slightest bit Asian myself.

I've got a group of close friends that are very interested in different cultures as well (one really likes China; one, Germany; one, Italy and France; ect.), and most of them like Japanese music and at least 4 of my friends think Ayu is a wonderful artist.

I've also got a group of friends that have absolutely no interest in foreign music but don't think any less of me for it.

Then I've got my family who make fun of my love of East Asia and tear me apart at family get togethers and tell me I'm not allowed home on breaks if I don't discontinue my Japanese language courses. Of course, they hate Ayu.

And then there's my (now ex)boyfriend who made me feel ashamed for liking Ayu, and when I told him about how CNN did a report on her he said, "Well, they have to fill their time with something." He is an uncultured, ignorant poli-sci and history major (not that I've got anything against them and their opinionated-ness...). I have since never spoke of her again to him.

But overall, I try to keep it on the downlow unless I feel the person is open enough to tolerate my likes. I find people of that sort more often now in college, but no so much in high school. *shrug*

Anyone else have a really insensitive boyfriend/family when regarding Ayu??

Hmmm, I've yet to actually get any 'classmates' into Ayu but I haven't even listened to Ayu around them much anyway.

However my friends in general seem to appreciate their music, at least that's what they tell me =P

They have no reason to lie though.

They don't usually have a problem with it.

same problem here.. in SG, i only have 2 friends who only noes how to appreciate Ayu. the others feel that "ayumi" sounds like a name of a pet or something.

unfortunately, the youngsters here cannot accept ayu is cos she is jus too old. and too mainstream. my frens will be so disgusted that i listen to ayumi cos they claimed that they cant understand what she is trying to sing.

And when they start to compare ayu with BoA (who is younger), namie (who is hotter in dancing), koda kumi (who is sexier) and utada (who has better songs), i start to get fed up.

sometimes i just tell my friends i listen to all kinds of j-pop songs jus to avoid ayu being insulted. its so unfair!
