I think some of ayu's music is, if you cant connect to it, it wont have meaning to it, her past stuff generally has memories attached, making them more special. You just have to make some new memories for her new songs But if you cant connect to her lyrics then the song will just usually pass by. And I think her albums are more her thing now, compared to her past stuff which I would imagine had a bigger marketing team. Now she just does what makes her happy

I think that's a good point. The Hamasaki Ayumi brand was a machine back in the day. There was a lot of promotion, hype and anticipation attached to many of her releases in the past. Now it's more like going through the motions. I don't think this makes ayu's music today any worse personally than it was in the early 2000's. I think she's still trying new things and expressing herself in new ways but some fans have a hard time connecting to it. She changed and so have we.

I honestly prefer her albums as a whole recently than in the past. For her older songs, I usually stick to the best albums. The only album I enjoyed start to finish (sans mini's) was RAINBOW. It's not so much I didn't like her music back then but albums like Love songs, COLOURS, A ONE and Made in Japan feel more like whole entities and are more enjoyable for me from start to finish. I think that is something she worked on throughout her career.

The one who found her and has supported her from day 1, even though he is apart of avex. He liked her sound long before any of us
I would say a true fan is one whos disc collection looks loved and used, not this, keep it in its plastic away from light, any things they get of ayus, they use and love, not for a collection value

i think as long as you describe yourself as a fan, you are a fan. there's no any better fans than others, there might be more passionate fans but they are still no any better than rest of us

Haha, the true fan stuff went from being a joke to actually being something people used to define again. You can only really split fans into 'casual fans' and 'active fans' imo, and that's only in the difference between "Oh, I like her when she's on the radio" to "I've bought her CDs/watched her live once/keep up with her updates" onwards...

So anyone who has signed up to a forum about her was, at least at one point, way more than a casual fan
There will always be people who think themselves above the rest because they spend a lot of money, and even as someone who has spent quite a bit in the past gathering up her albums, that's just a quality of life standard (being able to purchase things) rather than a fan standard. But I think most of us know this automatically through common sense - I hope no one feels they have to prove their fan status somehow because that's ridiculous. I'm always happy when I see new fans join the community no matter how long ago they started listening to Ayu.

EDIT: Also this is way off-topic now, so maybe if people want to continue this it should be taken to another thread.

I guess I'm not a true fan then lol. I only own the Photobook+CD/DVD version of (miss)understood and UNITE! singles and I bought them before J-Pop got too expensive for my budget. Tbh, I don't really care if other people don't even consider me to be a Ayu fan. In my opinion I am a fan. I'm just not a stan anymore (I stan for Koda Kumi, and even she does things that I don't like) but she will always be one of my all time favorite singers.
