Do you remember....

Megumi Hayashibara?

She just released a new single last week which ended up at number twelve in the oricon weekly chart. The single is called "Meet again" and contains four tracks. The first track "meet again" is the only new song on the single, the three others are some of her most popluar A-sides from previously released singles with new arrangements. Check out her discography here.

The reason why I decided to make this post is mainly because of the nostalgia some of the songs on this single evokes. When I first heard japanese contemporary music back in spring 2004 (by chanse, while searching for ethnic japanese songs for a performance on good old WinMx), it was the song "koishimasho nebarimasho" by Masami Okui. I was totally blown away and found more music she made. Some of the songs I found, and enjoyed the most, were collaberations by Masami Okui and Megumi Hayashibara. Get Along and Give a Reason which are on Meet again were some of my favourites along with songs like on sleepless nights... and Kiss in the dark. After a month or two I forgot about both of them, mainly becuase I discovered other japanese artists like Ayumi Hamasaki that seemed to have an endless numer of songs I liked. But if it haden't been for these two talented female musicians I would probably never had gotten into japanese music at all, and missed out on a lot of wonderful music.

Discovering this single released now was quite a surprise, also that it went so high in the chart even outselling "hot" artists like Mika Nakashima. Neither Masami Okui nor Megumi Hayashibara have ever sold tonzillions, but they have been in the business for quite a while, and their best songs are really good, even by todays standards.

Lastly, I feel like I should've written something on Megumi Hayashibara's career as the most famous seiyuu in the 90s. She has a very characteristic voice, also in her non-animé related songs, so no wonder her voice is what made her famous. I'm sure there's a lot to be written about her career in animé, but I never watched any animé at all and know Megumi Hayashibara exclusively through music, so if you want to know more about that, check out the link at the top of the page.

I hope you enjoy her songs, I especially recommend the ballad version of Give a Reason. All in all this single is like a mini-best of, and really worth its price. I coulden't find it at yesasia, but the first press is still avaliable at CDJapan:

Give a Reason ~ballad version~

Get Along ~Self Tag version~

Meet Again

don't be discouraged

(It's been a dit difficult to get information in english on this singles, so I'd be happy to receive any corrections etc if you have anything to contribute with =)
