The lyrics is good. i love this part
'I wasn't sad at all, but the reason I brimmed with tears Was that you had seeped through the scar in my heart And turned it in to such a tenderness *(3) That it hurt to think of you. If you should happen to come across a deep sadness, I wish that you would share it with me. I think I could do anything for your smile, My precious treasure.' |

I do wonder if these love songs all this time have been about Tomoya or her friends who recently went through a breakup.. :\

This one is pretty different from masas version.
It's horrible that we can never be sure with the translations if we're actually reading the exact emotions that Ayu wants to convey with her lyrics.

It is hard. It's one thing to look at the Japanese and understand it, but it's a task to bend and twist those lyrics in to some sort of shape that makes sense in English, without distorting their meaning. The two languages have next to nothing in common, and the ways of thinking behind them are entirely different. I always try to keep my translations relatively literal, as much to the exact word as possible, to leave the basic meaning while letting people's own perception derive the higher meaning. For every 1 Japanese word, English uses 10 synonyms with slightly different nuances. Furthermore, there are a lot of words in Japanese that take 25 words of English just to explain. To compound those in to relatively managable and still poetic English is very hard. A huge percentage of translation is your own perception of the whole story. I hope everyone reads as many translations as possible of any foreign text, to really expand their view to the full picture, because it's too near-impossible to put every nuance in a single translation.

Thank you for the explication.
It's great to know that you keep the translation as much to the exact word as possible, having a version like that is always great for reference and I think that this kind of translation should exist for every song she has made this far. masa is a great inretpretor, and if I'm to trust anyone elses interpretations than mine I would gladly go for his, with his deep knowledge about Ayu. I think that having his interpretation and a "direct" translation just perfect. Thank you for the awesome work, I'm very sorry I forgot to say that in my previous post.

I'm glad you accurately translated it =)
masa leaves a lot out and rearranges the structure... I dont even speak Japanese (though I can understand quite a bit from when I took it in Korea) but I can identify a lot of words that are either out of place in his translations, or just completely left out. |

Your translation has more soul than Masa's, in my opinion.
