Golden Week is a long holiday for the Japanese , Lisa & Bryan
it actually started last week on the last week of April cos April 29: Showa Day The birthday of former Emperor Showa. Before 2007, April 29 was known as Greenery Day (now celebrated on May 4). Due to the way the weekdays fall in 2010, Showa Day is an isolated holiday and not really part of Golden Week. May 3: Constitution Day A national holiday remembering the new constitution, which was put into effect after the war. Part of the Golden Week till 5 May. May 4: Greenery Day Until 2006, Greenery Day was celebrated on April 29, the former Emperor Showa’s birthday, due to the emperor’s love for plants and nature. It is now celebrated on May 4. This national holiday is celebrated as a day to commune with nature and be grateful for its blessings. May 5: Children's Day Also called boy’s festival, this is a day on which to esteem the personalities of children and plan for their happiness it is as big as the New Year holidays & all the 4 dates are considered public holidays in Japan so banks , offices , post offices , you name it , all will be closed pretty much on this week

I agree with those who want to stay home.
Tokyo kind of empties out during that time, so traveling outside of Tokyo, things are really crowded. I went to Karuizawa this week for Golden week and on the way home had to stand on a 1 1/2 hour long bullet train ride.
