I think they're both popular in Asia.. But of course, they're more popular in their respective homelands. Ayu in Japan, Girls Generation in Korea. But I don't think they're popular vice-versa.

They're both REALLY popular, and they got a lot of haters too..
But for today's public, especially the young ones *students* I bet girls generation is more popular since they made music for young people and this Korean wave thing..

I think nowadays SNSD is more popular between teenagers (and teenagers are the main fanbase)

Ayu probably has more fans in Korea than SNSD has in Japan.

Don't know if that means anything though.

From what I've read, their albums only sell a little over 100K. That's a third less than Ayu's latest album, and even less than her last few, and.....you get it. Also, like the above post mentions, Korean bands/singers are rarely very popular outside of the country, but Japanese artists can get fairly popular throughout Asia (and Ayumi is one of these artists).

So unless I've read SERIOUS understatements on their sales, they can't even touch Ayu, not even at her declining point these days, let alone HER peak.

^ Yeah, I know. And it's really impressive. For Koreans. .......Hell, I guess it's even fairly impressive for average artists in Japan. XD But for a popular artist in Japan, even the declining Ayumi Hamasaki..? It's a whole other level.

Japanese artists simply have an advantage over every other Asian artist, though. Japan has the bigger music market and the more popular acts. Koreans can come close sometimes, but..... Yeah.

ayu is more of a pop icon, and very well known by everybody. At least if you mention her name in China, Singapore, HK, they will know who you are talking about for sure.

the korean group is just another successful korean group but haven't yet become an icon... you need years to become one ^^

oh OH oh! oh ppa I love u.

well errrrrrr dunno if they can even be compared for popularity is since one is a living J-Pop legend while the other is a 9-member Korean girlgroup who makes annoying songs like, "oh oh oh oh ppa i love u!" yet it's so catchy @___@

okay I'm not making sense.

Well obviously girls generation is going to be more popular in Korea because they are korean. However, world wide Ayumi is known at last to a certain extent because she's more than a fly by night singer..she's an artist as well as a pop icon. so to answer your question more directly in terms of popularity in korea Girls Generation would be deemed more popular (its their own field) in japan Ayumi would be more popular. As for world wide recognition Ayumi would win.

SNSD is not as successful and probably will never be as successful as ayu. I do love them, but they will not last over 12 years and still remain popular like ayu. I'd be surprised if they were still around in 5 years.

^Sadly, I think this is true.

Female pop groups rarely stay together very long before ego and ambition breaks them up. It seems like they're only together long enough for each member to accomplish some level of fame before moving on. I bet with SNSD, the more popular members will continue singing with solo careers, the less popular members will become TV personalities, and the least popular members will just fade away.

Keeping this in mind, I've decided to not let it bug me and that I'll just enjoy them for what they are and for however long they're together. I doubt neither of my favourite members would continue with solo careers and I don't find any of the lead vocalists that interesting so SNSD is it for me.

well I guess you probably compare Ayu with wondergirls who really started overseas (I mean out of Korea) promotions than SNSD who just start to do that... they'll focus on Japanese market so we'll see if they're really big all over Asia (included Japan)...

but Kara and 4minute are already doing that... and I think that morning musume are too popular in Japan to really give a chance to any korean girl group there...

Oh and considering the type of legend that Ayu built... you probably compare her to a big korean solo act.

Ayu has been active for more than 10 years now. She was once a HUGE and extremely popular idol. I'm pretty sure she was well-known all over Asia since 2001-2002, at the highest peak of her career. Even now, I think a lot of people in Asia a part from Japan know who Ayumi is. And she has lots of fans in HK, Taiwan etc too.

SNSD right now is super popular too though. More than Ayu? Maybe not. But the popularity they have gained since their debut (it's only been 3 years) is really impressive. They are really popular in Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan (or else, there wouldn't be a SNSD copycat group lol) and even in Japan (when it was announced that they were going to debut in Japan, it made into the news!). I'm pretty sure most people know "Gee" in Asia.

IMO, SNSD is probably more popular in Asia now compared to Ayu. But Ayu is overall more well-known.
