"The GRAMMYs are the only peer-presented award to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position."

That's what I found at the Grammy's website. But Im still not getting how it works...

I believe it works like the academy awards where a group of people in the industry get to vote on it.

OK.. with like half a second of looking at their website I can tell you how it works.

You BUY a membership to their foundation and you get to send in a vote. A lot of awards do this. I know the Saturn Awards do. Come to think of it I think that's how the Oscars works too. So it doesn't have to be exclusive to people who work in the industry but usually will be a majority of people that are involved or care about the industry because they have to buy a membership.

Usually you have to become a member by a certain date before the awards to be elegible to vote. My guess is that the membership fees are steep to prevent any Joe Blow from being able to vote, though I don't know how much it costs.

As for nominees, I believe they have a review panel to pick them in the first place, and it's usually the norm for such awards that people who submit their work for consideration have to pay a fee. Usually around awards time you'll also see people put in advertisements in industry magazines to get people to vote for them or for people to nominate them.

Awards shows like the Screen Actors Guild and other Guilds (writers, directors, etc) awards are exclusive to the industry because you have to be a member to participate and the only way you can be is if your resume backs it up and if you pay union dues, because basically that's what the guilds are unions that provide things like health insurance etc. in an industry where employment doesn't necessarily get you those type of things. I know from my training in acting and experience with people who are professional actors it takes a bit of work to get a guild card.

The Academy Awards - Nickname "Oscars" - Awards for Movies. Return of the King won 11.

Japanese grammy type thing is the Golden Disk Award, though they may not work the exact same way as the American awards.

because a lot of people feel that those artists who receive Grammys lack in what I just quoted above

and Grammy awards always go out to mainstream artists and you NEED to be popular or no one will vote for you because they've never heard of you. And a lot of popular artists lack talent, so... I don't like the Grammys =P

Agree with Larisa...

And what's the fun of watching an awards show where the same one artist wins like every award?... *cough* Norah Jones... She's not that good, I thought 'A Thousand Miles' should have won Record Of The Year...

oh.... this person at some other jpop forum was saying that Beyonce was more talented than ayu cause she had won grammys and the only awards ayu had won were the mtv
this is what the guy or girl said
Quote:
Beyonce = write her own music & lyric, good dancer, producer, won grammIES for her solo album. sold million copies of her solo album and her group's.

ayumi = write her own lyrics, other than won mtv asia award and japan award (for her record sellings), i cant think of any awards that she's got for her actual music, not because of her records or popularity

she's nothing comparing to beyonce.. and plus beyonce is original which is something that Ayumi is not

but larisa just said what i wanted to know really about how the grammys work

its based on how popular the artists is ...

Beyonce = Original?

She writes her own 'music' and 'lyrics'...?

Ok so...?

Just because you win a grammy doesn't mean anything... Just look at some winners like... Milli Vanilli, Paula Cole, Jamiroquai, Shawn Colvin... These people are like... dead.

Geez some people take "labels" too seriously. What great thing is Beyoncé writing her own lyrics if the lyrics are stupid? Plus it's quite obvious american artists will always get much more recognition and prizes, japanese music industry is far from getting the power american music industry has.
