(miss)information: Ayu Myths Checked
This actually has nothing to do with the album (miss)understood, I just thought it was clever. It's kinda.. not, but whatever.
Anyway. What misconceptions, misinformation, and just plain WRONG facts about ayu do you keep hearing even though you know they're not true? Or what do you want to confirm/deny? Consider this the ayu "mythbusters" thread. I'll update the first post of the thread with "myths" you guys post or send in, and whether they're true or not, with sources to prove it. Now for the myths. Is "evolution" is featured in .hack? No. I'm not sure how this got started, but I think it's most often encountered in the id3 tagging of an mp3. I've learned not to trust id3 tags anymore. Probably a fan wanted to spread the song faster and put that it was from .hack to make that happen. But as you can see here, NONE of the .hack soundtracks feature the song. On top of it, "evolution" was released in january 2001 and the .hack anime made its debut in spring 2002. Does Ayu have a song entitled "Butterfly?" from emikotagawa No.Ayu does NOT have a song named Butterfly. The song was mislabeled as an Ayu song, however it is by Smile.dk and was used for a DDR. It is uploaded on bearshare under Ayu's name, but I also see that someone has labeled it part of the Rurouni Kenshin Soundtrack, and some tags that are currently attached to it are "Japanese Techno" and "Chinese-Techno." I had this one girl just totally not believe me, she thought that it just never appeared on an album, but I tell you, this song is not Ayu's. 1 Clue: it's entirely in English. Does Ayu have PVs for independent, July 1st, and HANABI? I saw the H CM and there's footage! from Calico No. From PickleCookies: "The HANABI was a Tu-ka CM (cell phone) of Ayu crying in the rain, while singing HANABI in acapella. The independent clip was just a clip from Arena Tour 2002. The July 1st clip was a CM she did for KOSE where July 1st was the CM song." What about UNITE!, NEVER EVER, I am..., A Song for XX... from QT Mashi and myself No PVs for them either. UNITE! has a short promo clip used for CMs and on music video TV shows, using footage from either rehearsals or an early show during DOME TOUR 2001. NEVER EVER has a similarly-used promo clip using all new footage shot especially for it. I am..., A Song for XX, and POWDER SNOW were all featured in commercials for their respective albums using newly shot footage, but there are no full-length PVs for those songs. Does Ayu have a more-than-professional relationship with Max Matsuura? from LaucusClyne From me: Not Likely. While there's been nothing PROVEN either way, it is fairly well-known that ayu was taken between 2000 and 2007, and not by Matsuura. While he may have been flirtatious with her when trying to get her to sign with Avex, ayu has said in interviews that he seemed rather shady to her, which would imply that she didn't flirt back, much less spark up a relationship. Blog posts and interview quotes from Max imply that he has great respect for her on a professional level, but nothing more than that. Did Ayu refuse to bow to the Princess of Thailand? No.This got started from an article published in the Japan Times, which is usually a truthful and reliable source. But what alot of people neglect to notice is that the column, Tokyo Confidential, gets its stories from the tabloids. They make no illusions about it either, it says so right on the page. If that's not enough to convince you that this isn't true, Ayu also posted a rebuttal of the article at the TeamAyu message board. "...It seems that an article about me is going around. Actually, Ayu heard about the weekly magazine's article when Ayu's manager, Mag, saw it and handed it to me a little while ago. Although I usually try not to care about these rumors about me, I was actually rather disturbed by it. I'm really upset you guys had to read something like this. ...I'm sorry if I made you nervous. But I'd like to think that the writer heard the incorrect story from someone, and wrote this thinking that it was true. I don't think he was being mean on purpose. Because I think he has his pride as a professional, and is a human, same as me. Ayu would like to put confidence in human beings instead of just saying "That damn mass media!" Everyone makes mistakes..." Also, according to a Thai fan, it is not necessary for a foreigner to keep their eyes below those of the Princess, or even the Queen. By all TRUE accounts, ayu has been a fairly level-headed person (except when it comes to her dogs) despite her superstar status. Does Ayumi Hamasaki really account for 40% of avex's revenues? from jerms About that, according to TimeAsia, March 2003! "[Ayu's] record sales account for a stunning 42.6% of Avex's overall revenues, according to Oricon Global Entertainment, Japan's version of Billboard." (thanks to Petit below.) It has dropped significantly though. As of August 3rd 2004, according to Bloomberg and UBS Warburg Japan, "Pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki ... accounted for about 10 percent of Avex's total revenue". It should be noted that this IS revenue (total income), which is different from profit. Profit is revenue minus expenses (the costs of manufacturing, advertising, etc), or, the money the record label gets to pocket. Other people have said Ayu accounts for up to 50% of avex's profits, but there doesn't seem to be any time during which that was ever true. Ayumi Hamasaki did porn before becoming famous? from jerms No. Not strictly speaking anyway. Before signing with avex, from about 1994 to 1997, she was an "aidoru": japanese for "idol" (also sounds like "love doll"), but this isn't an "idol" in the american sense; Ayu was basically a professional cute girl. "Aidoru" in Japan do magazine spreads in bathing suits, commercials, and staged interviews for the sake of appearing a certain way to the guys buying the magazines. Some sing and act also, and ayu did act as well as doing a hip-hop mini-album that didn't do well. Aidoru are intended as multi-talented "dream girls" who, to be honest, are only in existance for the sake of entertaining guys' fantasies. This is KIND OF like porn in that way, but Ayu has never posed nude or even in any sort of sexual positions while clothed. She is commonly seen in nothing more than a bikini though. Send me more, and I shall disillusion you.

^^i've never heard that one wow. I always wanted one of these threads...a haven for information.
Does Ayu have a song entitled "Butterfly?" Ayu does NOT have a song named Butterfly. The song was mislabeled as an Ayu song, however it is by DJ Mystik and was used for a DDR. A question I've heard from some people, "Is Ayu GAY (as in a lesbo)?"

^ Ahhhh, I was going to do the Butterfly one!
Q: Does Ayu have any PVs for independent, July 1st, or HANABI? No. What the heck! I've seen the }{ CM and there's footage! That footage is from other CMs in which the song was endorsing a product. Although the only one I know for sure is that July 1st was for KOSE. (I think HANABI was for a candy, but I am NOT sure) And is independent footage from a performance? |

Wow, I didn't expect such a reaction! But I updated the first post with all those new myths, but I didn't include the "ayu is retiring" one since that's more of a rumor that keeps coming up than a long-running myth that newer fans continue to believe.

I'm still looking that one up.
Also trying to find solid info on whether ayu was talking to a handicapped person or a bored avex executive up front at that one concert when she complained that they weren't standing up & having fun. I remember reading that it WAS an executive, but alot of people are still sure it was a handicapped person and ayu apologized for it later. Okay, I found info on the Thailand thing. Posting it now.

I've got a question -- is LOVE~Destiny~ an A-side or a B-side? It was a single and it was on A BEST...but there's still confusion in the b-side thread....?

Ayumi has never posed nude.
Ayumi does have a boyfriend. Ayumi does not make up 50% of Avex's profit Ayumi does/has had an ear infection/"mild loss of hearing" There is no word on ayumi retiring. There is no word on A Best 2. There is no word on ayumi being married or pregnant There is no word on if ayumi has had eye surgery I'm pretty sure ayumi does not lipsync. delirium-zero, you've been creating some pretty pimpin' threads lately.
