Japan's Record Taisho Award's Grand Prix prize is the equivalent of an American Grammy. Ayumi has won this award several times. It's based on sales as well as popularity.

She's the only artist who has ever won it 3 consectutive times (as well as 3 times in total I think ). She has won it for Dearest (2001), Voyage ('02) and No Way To Say ('03).

After 2003's No Way To Say I think she decided to decline all awards from the Taisho Awards and kind of 'retired' from them. She commented that after winning it 3 times in a row, an achievement no ones done before, she felt that other artists deserve this award as well or something like that.

Which explains why she hasn't recieved any award at all from the taisho grand pix since 2003 Neither has utada really... makes you think. Utada hasn't won the grand award ever which really raises outbrows!

ORANGE RANGE won it in 2004 for hana I think, and koda kumi won it last year for Butterfly. I didn't see THAT one comming I'm sure Ayu could've got the award for STEP you or HEAVEN if she was still in the running XD 'course, I'm glad Koda won it Especially since butterfly is like, the first upbeat song to have won it in ages.

But Hana was really good. I love that song.

Which I think put her out of running after that. I'm not sure.

The Japan Gold Disc Awards (Japanese: 日本ゴールドディスク大賞, Nihon Goorudo Disuku Taishou) is one of Japan's most prestigious yearly award giving body. The Golden Disc awards is the equivalent of the western world's Grammy's.
Founded in 1987 by Record Industry Association of Japan, the winners is based on record sales which make them very credible, though, it is very much predictable who will win. They conducted their awarding ceremonies during the first quarter of the year (mostly during March. This is opposed to Nihon Record Taisho, which is a year-end awards ceremonies)
What's the difference then between the Japan Gold Disc Awards and the Nihon Record Taisho Awards?

She also said that she was to not participate in any more awards.. that she does not even want to be put into consideration for nomination or something in the article at her site. Or maybe it was something else. But it was strange how this year, Ayu was at barely any award-y thingies hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm xD

'Japan Gold Disc Awards and the Nihon Record Taisho Awards?'

I think one is for cumulative sales at the end of the year [Japan Record Awards] and the Gold Disc is sort of for fan popularity and etc.

I was wondering wherre Ayu was at the Best Hit Kayousai...

The Gold Disc Award is given by the RIAJ only for sales. However, its popularity has decreased significantly in light of the Nihon Record Taisho, since that recognizes talent + sales. The winner of one is not necessarily the winner of the other. Ayu won the Nihon Record Taisho in 2002 for Voyage, but Hikaru Utada won the Gold Disc Award for that year (since Deep River sold more).

Why didn't she accept the award for INSPIRE? I heard that it had to do with INSPIRE being a song just for the fans and that she didn't want to accept the award for a song like that.

If anyone has any articles, English or Japanese, on that I'd like to see them.

The Japan Gold Disc Awards is based on sales and popularity. So you can say this is the Japanese equivalent for America's Billboard Music Awards, which also honour the most popular artist and the best selling single and album based on all Billboard charts. In fact, the highest honour of Billboard Musci Awards is Artist of the Year, which also the highest honour for The Japan Gold Disc Awards. Amazingly, Ayu won the awards 3 times.
