ayumi's royalty
I wonder how much Ayu earns per single or album. Or she gets paid by contract? If she got royalties from her album or single, is 10% of the selling price sound reasonable?

I have no idea... But you figure, with the size of avex and the amount of people that work for her/with her that share the profits, she can't get nearly as much as she should. :\

I'm sure she receives royalties from her sales. Most artists do, yes? But again, I really wouldn't know, it's just a guess on my part really.

supposedly an artist gets 2USD$ for every album or singe they sell
and the rest goes to their record companies |

In avex and some companies is different.
In avex ayu earns money for tours, endoresments (tie-ins, CMs and stuff like that) and tour goods. Also she gets paid with a monthly salary. (They decide one's salary most likely in the contract for how much he's worth). |

Ayu is in the industry for a long time, so I guess we can say she earns a little more, probably between 30 and 50%, 50-60 if she wrote all the song thats my guess(only applys to singles, albums and Best ofs), if she earned less, she probably would have changed labels by now she of course earns from concerts, CMs and merchandise as well, but theres nothing as "fixed" as for CD and DVD sales, like CMs for example, they can go from 50.000 dollars to several millions Last edited by noidea; 2nd November 2009 at 09:32 PM. |

Supposedly, it's by percentage, like 15 to 30% percent to successful artists like Ayu... If I'm not wrong the biggest royalties ever are Michael Jackson's of about 40-50% per copy sold back in the 90's

It would be interesting to know, but I don't think we'll ever find out.
And I think we can confidently say that even if she retires now, she'll have enough money to buy whatever she wants for the rest of her life.

as long as her royalties are not like DBSK's in SM Entertainment, I think she's okay

Spoiler:
I believe ayu got 30% from total sales CD. i think song writer earn more than singer. record company => songwriter => singer => cd shop

1) If a Korean album from them doesn't hit 500k copies, they would not get a single cent. So far, since their debut album in Korea, none of their albums have sold more than 500k copies, so they have received $0 in terms of record sales. 2) SM Entertainment doesn't give them the copyright/patentship whatever you call it for songs/musics that the members have composed and/or written lyrics for. Eew. But that's a little off-topic lol~ Anyway, with Max, I don't think Ayu would be underpaid or whatever. With records, CMs, endorsements, concerts, a-nation and song writer + her CREA stuff... she should take up around 15-30% of her sales.

I have no idea...but i belive she has a forfait engagement per each release and then maybe some royalties per copy..but 10 % sounds a lot.

^10% for album is a HUGE amount.
The only artist royalty that I have ever heard of is Ami Suzuki. She has a fixed monthly salary (so it doesn' matters how much she sells, short term talking of course.) and at the beginning of her career (when she was no one) she got payed at around 1500 USD I think. I saw it on an interview some time ago so this is not by heart. Of course right now no one knows how much she earns, but probably all artist start with the same "standard" salary. So I pretty much believe that Ayu has a monthly salary. Firstly you gotta count her CM appearances and endorsments, and that's where Japanese celebrities get their highest levels of income. You can actually live on commercials, sometimes they even pay artistes 100000 or 200000 USD per TV spot. The least popular celebrities don't get less than 7000 or 10000 USD anyways. Secondly, magazines. They pay Ayu for appearing on their covers, tho usually she gets payed less than a model, since she's actually promoting a single or an album when she is on ViVi or stuff like that. And of course, keep in mind that all her expenses while working (and that's a lot of time!! xD) are paid by Avex. The studio, rehearsal places, food, wardrobe in many cases, hair/makeup etc. and travel expenses are all paid by the record company. Tours are also a huge source of profit, and if she owns the copyright of her songs (which she will obviously do on the songs she composed, and anyway owns part of all of them for the lyrics), she also gets money from there. So I think that if we had to put it on a list, it would look like this: AYUMI HAMASAKI'S INCOME SOURCES (from greater income to lesser income):
Anyway, she obviously will have to pay lots of taxes anyway. Making an estimate, (which I believe is real hard to do without actual data, and probably my idea is nowhere close to reality, but anyway, I'm bored so I'll give it a try xD), I imagine that her royalty probably is around 400-500 million USD, not counting her properties like cars or houses. |
