Question Karaoke help

I want to participate in AHS' annual karaoke contest next year, but I'm having some difficulty with the recording process.

Currently I use audacity to record acapellas and it does great, but when I try to record over an instrumental track there's a 1/2 second delay and the backing vocals overpower me. When I remove the instrumental, you can hear me semi-acapella and everything is in tune with the song---it's only when their left together that it sounds bizarre.

Is there something wrong with the program I'm using or is their a step that I'm not doing that will solve the problem. Also, if anyone has any suggestions about a better program for recording please tell me. (Although this doesn't relate to this, my friends and I are trying to start up a band and well...we can't record ourselves like this.)

Thanks again, and MODs if this needs to be somewhere else...please move it to wherever you see fit. ^_^;

I always record with audacity and never had a problem. Just put the instrumental on a playback on headphones and sing over it. If the backings overpower you that means you are singing either not loud enough or not powerful enough, you can change the volume of every track you record.
For the delay you can move your recording to a few milliseconds earlier or later, one of the cursors can do that.
