and you are right. the correct pronouns to use are ALWAYS the pronouns of the sex a transitioning person is presenting as. basically, if she is dressing as a woman, you should always refer to her using female pronouns, regardless of where she is in her transition. doing otherwise is rude.

lol Personally I used "him" to denote that the "him" from before, did something good for himself.

Now that she's a girl, I'll always refer to her as a girl.

I don't think it's okay because she's biologically male. I use pronouns by personal identification.

Understanding a factual statement without the necessary context as "rude" just is a sign of jumping to conclusions too quickly to me.

She is both male and female now. I respect that she identifies as female and that she prefers that pronoun, but I see no reason for the truth to be offensive. The pronoun the person identifies with is, of course, preferable, but the other one remains correct. That said, the "he" in my first post was not done purposely, but simply because for years I have known of that person as "him", I would obviously use "she" if I personally knew her and/or was personally talking to her, simply because it is probably her wish.
In the end, today nobody can fully change their gender(it will hopefully become possible one day), they might identify with another one, but will remain at least biologically of their original gender with elements of the other gender(some purely visual, some functional). It's nothing disrespectful, rude or ignorant, - it's nothing to look down on either - it's simply truth. How that truth is treated - with acceptance or without - is the question, but ignoring it won't do anything.

But to get back on track:
I am hopeful that she will have a more fulfilled life after this. I really cannot say more since I only know her from being Ayumi's former dancer.

Wow, she's really inspiring and very brave indeed.

I hope that she can be happy, although I'm sure that she feels a million times better now than before

Soo interesting to be able to follow the lives of these people who are part of our fandom! My best wishes for her!

But I think it is important to set sex apart from gender. Today you can fully change your gender, not your sex. That has nothing to do with ignoring the truth. It's just that in this world most people wouldn't accept the change of one's sex and by calling Hide now she instead of he one can show acceptance.

Pretty much.

Still people around here tend to make an argument out of everything...

I think that's the point people are trying make, yeah, in that sex and gender are two different things. Sex is a word we use to describe a set of biological characteristics, whereas gender is a social construction that is performed and reaffirmed through action and interaction. According to Judith Butler, (1988, though essentially the same definition was given by scholars West and Zimmerman in 1987):
Quote:
Gender is an identity specific to a particular place and time, demonstrated to the outside world through a stylized repetition of acts, the reenactment and re-experiencing of a set of meanings already socially established.
So while our society has established the dual structure of male/female as definitive and all-encompassing, this is not necessarily true for all societies across the globe (I'm not necessarily applying this to Japan in particular, where this binary is accepted by most parties in the modern day), and additionally, sex and gender need not necessarily be in accordance with one another.

Does that make sense? >.<

I head about the Matrix director. One of the Wachowski brothers, but I don't remember which one. Or their individual names.

I know that a member from a Visual Kei band got one not too long ago, after the band broke up. Then she became a prostitute. It made me sad, because I thought she was in a relationship with one of the members and I thought they were so freaking cute.

Holy crap, I cant believe that.

there is a HUGE difference between SEX and gender. You can be male (sex) but feel and be female (gender) and vice verse. To say that people can not or to not even acknowledged the fact is inhumanly gross.

also, one can completely change their SEX and gender.

About about the he/she talk... it all depends on the person. HIDE might not find it offensive at all to be still called a HE by his/her's friends... or even people that HIDE as just met, (although I don't know why HIDE would go by male if he is female to new people?)

I have know transgender people go by both because they understand that it is a HUGE adjustment. and the point of it is to make it as easy as possible for yourself and loved ones.

Sometimes I wish English had a gender neutral pronoun. =/

Anyway, in AT05 there was a funny scene in the extras where Ayu messes up his name, maybe, by calling him Subaru? I don't remember exactly, but that's how I remember his name.

^ it? lol, although that might be offensive to some.

the english language is to homophobic to have a gender neutral pronoun... although it might not be homophobic and more 'label obsessive.'

In general people seem to have the need to identify humans clearly as he or she by gender typical behavior and appearance.
