I've done an Ayu report for Japanese class before (my friend Yuki had done an Amuro one two years in a row! XD ) and brought in a bunch of my stuff.

However, relating to your story, one of my Japanese teachers also showed Kouhaku. She did show Ayu's performance but the one she was super psyched about was the SMAP one. It was the year they did their (arguably) most popular song "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana." She even made us sing along! It was so funny.

no offense but...that quote has always come across to me as cynical (though it really isn't) like some saying "even though you'll never pass, at least you tried i guess", and if i saw that above a locker with inspirational quotes, i would probably giggle.

hmm back in freshmen year, i did my speech project on japan or something and passed around memorial address, because some people couldn't believe "japan actually makes pop music??!". i can't remember anything else...

My Japanese teacher back in high school was an Ayu fan, so sometimes she'd put on her music when we were working on a project. One time she showed Kouhaku during lunch. Also, I did a report of Ayu for my culture project, as well as explain the meaning of "M" to the class.

For World Language Day a couple years back, there was a "Japanese Singing" workshop, and "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana" was one of the songs we had to sing. The Japanese professors showed us the Kouhaku performance first, and they were swooning over the SMAP boys, heh heh.

I wrote an essay on how listening to music (mainly Ayumi) is my hobby. I got a 10 out of 10 as the grade, although I'm very self-conscious about my writing (if you can be self-conscious about that) so I didn't let anyone read it. I also hide the fact that I listen to Japanese music in school. I've only told one of my classmates about Ayumi. I let her listen to (miss)understood (the song) and she thought it was okay. Everyone else who knows about my JPop-obsession is 30+ years old.
(Although I must admit I dream DAILY how there could be some type of lesson in music class where you have to sing along to one of the songs of your favorite singer. I picture how shocked everyone would be once they heard JAPSOUNDZ. )

I'm explaining xDD :
In 2004, our English teacher asked us to do a project about music and an artist =)
So I've decided to choose Japanese Music, because then I LOVED anime's introductions/endings [Pokémon, Sakura Card Collector, Fruits Bascket ect xD]
Well, while looking at the internet, I found Enka, J-Rock, Visual and... J-Pop!
At THAT time, I was soooo into Britney/Evanescence/Beyoncé/Shakira era~, so choose J-Pop =)

J-pop > Wikipédia > Queen of J-Pop > Ayumi Hamasaki
Humm.... interesting =o
Who's that girl ??? Must be perfect for the J-pop as she's the queen =3
And then I found some articles and informations =)
I presented the whole project in English [My 1st languages are Arabic & French by the way =p], and people at first were like "uh! Japanese music! nyanyanya"

Then I showed them an extract of evolution at DOME TOUR 2001 [My reaally 1st Ayu vidéo ever xD]
Some were interested, some were "Japanese Music ? O.o Nooo waaay~"

1 mounth after the project, I decided to discover more Ayu songs, my 1st Ayu song was "still alone", my first Ayu release was single "CAROLS" ect...
I was printing all the Panasonic posters xD [Remeber the STEP You one xD I've showed it to like... All the High school I swear xDD]
I was SOOOO EXCITED I was talking 100% about Ayu *.*
"Oww that haircut looks like Ayu's one" "Do you imagine how many CD did she sold ? =3"
Then I was burning some AudioCD to the whole class, printing pictures, bringing some vidéos to the class, giving exemples at school with Ayu xD
I was like a crazy, and I think that's why others were more interested...

Today!
Not everybody that I know LOVE her [My cousine HATE her by the way =__=]
But I can assure that EVERYBODY KNOWS her, 100% xD
Not any one didn't heard the name "Ayu" "Ayumi" "Ayuuuuu" during these 2 years, and I'm happy xD
Some call me "Mr.Japaaaan", others just "Ayu" (They surely don't know her, just heard the name xD)
I'm proud of that =3 Now I can tell everybody about Ayu, I can listen to Japanese music without those "Uhh~ O.o;;;" =)

PS : Sorry because it's too long or lot of mistakes, but I like coming here to practice and discuss, just even read your messages, I enjoy it ^^;"""

u r the MAN, dude!

A couple of years ago for the Japanese Speech Contest I spoke about how listening to Ayumi has helped my Japanese. I think I was the only one who liked her in my Japanese classes though, everyone else was big Utada or Ken Hirai fans.

I've written articles on her for my Journalism class before. I wrote a mock review of "Secret" just last week, actually. Not one person in the class has ever heard of her, so I always get comments. Everyone's like, "She's so pretty~! oO"

It's quite fun.

Unfortunately, I hadn't really discovered J-pop until my my senior year of high school and I went into independant studies that year so I wasn't even in a classroom/around other students to talk about it with. I have managed to bring Ayu to work... This past holiday season, we were selling some of those iHome things and a few CD players at work. So to show how they work I made some mix CDs and would play them. One was all Ayu-mi-x/trance type stuff which a few people liked.

me and my classmate were listening to ayu's evolution and my classmate sang it like crazy in the classroom. everyone was very curious at the song and they sang along the 'wow yeah wow yeah, lol. then, one day i brought my speakers and let my classmates play with my ipod in that speakers, they played evolution and other ayumi songs, they liked evolution and they checked it out. One of my classmates even asked me to put evolution in his ipod. Another classmates liked is this LOVE? and other ayu Rock songs. Also, another classmate said she's like Evanescence.

back when i'm in school(or even work now), japan music or japan culture had been so close to me.

Say in my second year in secordary school-2000, the teacher showed us in art class of a girl's work. She drawn out Ayu-mix-II cover(the cat and ayu picture)!
in 1999, one of my senior in choir is a huge SPEED fan, and she listen to ayu too. there are times when she will play japan music during break. i remembered there was a time when she perform ayu's 'a song for xx' on the stage.
in 2001, i get to knew 2 friends who love kinki kids and SMAP. They had their picture on their folders/tables/wallet/textbooks and even more in their house! and they are the ones who got me more interested in manga and anime.

Then i found ayu in 2001 when A-best was out.
now, i found a friend who had the same interests as me, anime, manga, japanese songs(she likes koda kumi, ayu, GLAY....but mostly she prefer anime songs)

Till now, i am carrying my love for ayu wherever i go. take now for example, i'm playing ayu's and other japanese songs at my workplace. lucky my colleges are very understanding, one of them like k-pop. though i do encounter harsh comments like 'yuck! they sound disgusting, since i don't understand them!'
there are times when after work(i'm working at a kids department) or when there are less kids around after 9pm, i'll play my japanese artist DVD on the computer(like kuu and ayu). i had saw people stopping to look when waiting for the taxi to come. once there's a guy who request me to repeat the disc when the pvs of Black Cherry DVD stopped!

No one knows or cares abt Ayu in my class. Plus, they think that all Japanese people are ugly and have weirdo eyes. (Racist? I know...)
I was too scared to talk about Ayu. Imagine what kinda stuff they would say about her!!

yeah it happens all the time, kind of. Very often I incorporate her into my work, such as english when I write my essays I like to put as many ayu songs/words in there just for fun. Thats not really in the class room but its in my work hehe.

For viscomm I made a vector of ayu and decorated it on photoshop as my design for a clock face. The teacher said he liked it and that he wants to make a duplicate to hang up at the art show, so um does that count as a class room? GAHAHA

Whee, I've been able to incorporate Ayu into a lot of my school work xD

My first time was when we had to make plates of a picture in Art class I picked Ayu's (miss)understood CD+DVD cover, so I redrew it and now have a plate of it

Another time, I had an assignment for English class to pick a song and discuss how the lyrics are poetry in a PowerPoint presentation. I picked A Song for XX So on the PowerPoint I put a lot of pics of Ayu from her PVs where she looked kinda lonely and stuff and had ASFXX "030213 Session #2" playing in the background ^__^

Most recently, I made an Ayu pastel drawing of this Ayu pic for art class this year: http://zyrex.org/gallery/d/40859-4/cawaii20060106.jpg It even got hung up in my school's showcase 8DD
