Utada's first three albums are all in the Top 10 of "highest-selling Japanese album of all time". Not counting Precious of course.

Ultra Blue isn't that good an album.

this site lists sales and is up-dated too :RIAJ Certified Million seller albums

I'm not sure how accurate it is , but it looks pretty correct to me. it has 'First Love' by Hikki as the best-selling album.

Yes and while we're at it:

Michael Jackson's Thriller is the most selling album-ever in the world..

50-60 million copies worldwide, I believe.

^That's sick, considering Ayu is working on reaching 50mil in total sales, counted throughout her entire career with all her releases added up together.

As much as wikipedia can be trusted... they have a compiled list of the highest selling albums, world wide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...bums_worldwide

Here's one for singles, as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best-se...gles_worldwide

Don't trust those blindly, but they do actually give a quite accurate view of how it looks. No Japanese artist is even close to entering any of those two "charts".

Piracy has a lot to do with the whole market slowing down.

That is what the recording companies tell us, research pretty much point in the very much exact opposite direction. Piracy has rather saved the recording industry, making the sales drop slower than they normally would.

The normal CD-R is almost an obsolete medium after so many years, just like its predecessors, vinyls, tapes etc. They all had lower and lower sales, and then a new medium to release media on was invented.

The recording companies simply need to find a new attractive way to present us their music, if they want to earn excessive amounts of money again.

None of them is certainly not running low on money, at the least.

Seriously, the whole downloading thing really helps with deciding on purchases. I've purchased a bunch of things just based on downloading.

Although I'll mourn the death of the CD market. 192kbs mp3 purchasing does not cut it for me.
