Have you read a proper translation of the lyrics? They are chock full of bird imagery. For example, Ayu sings of waking to a voice (birdsong?) when the weather clears up. She sings about soaring through the blue sky. She sings about how someone watched over the wings on her back. And she sings about how the subject of the song offered his/her wings to her.
