I went to the show in Boston on Friday and had a fabulous experience, although there were a couple of hiccups getting there.
GETTING THERE My friend, who is a huge Hikki fan, and my boyfriend, who likes some of her songs but isn’t exactly a fan, shared the experience with me. My friend was not able to get to my apartment until 4pm, and the club’s doors opened at 7pm, so we left right away, thinking we could maybe grab food while waiting in line or something, as none of us had eaten dinner. We were taking the train into Boston, and when we arrived at the station, my friend suggested I leave my pocketbook in the trunk of my car so that I didn’t have to worry during the show. Now, I had bought the tickets online and had them mailed to me because I liked the idea of having a real ticket stub to keep as a memento. So guess what I forgot to take out of my pocketbook before locking it in my trunk? The tickets!! And of course I did not realize this until we had made half the journey already. Back we went to grab the tickets, in a major hurry to catch the outbound train before it sped away. My friend called the venue and they told us we could use our IDs to get in if we had forgotten the tix, but by the time we thought to call, we were pretty much back at the starting point, and I said, “let’s just get the dang tickets.” Anyway, we didn’t arrive at the Paradise Rock club until 7pm or so, and the line was stretched all the way down the street. Some girl walking by stopped and asked me, “who’s playing tonight?” and when I answered, “Utada Hikaru,” she made a weird face like, “who the hell is that?” and walked away, haha. Clearly, though, more people knew about Utada than perhaps the venue expected, because the security dude who checked my ID muttered under his breath, “how long is this (bleep)ing line?!” Security had us split up into lines of males and females to be frisked, and there were probably 5 females for every 1 male. The told us we would be thrown out if we were caught using our cell phones, because “per artist request” there were no photos allowed. When the security lady shined her flashlight into in my pocketbook (I just brought the whole thing in order to prevent another numb-skull incident of forgetting something important) she had a hard time seeing around the big, green Girl Scout cookie box that was crammed in there, thanks to my boyfriend who could not resist buying them at the starting train station. ME: Sorry, those are my cookies. LADY: Uhhh, you can’t bring those in here. ME: Yeah, I know, I’ll get rid of— LADY: You need to throw them out, get rid of them. ME: Sure, sure, no problem— LADY: Just put them over there. ME: I’m not even arguing about it! Then my boyfriend was mad that his cookies got canned. I told him it was a small sacrifice to make in order to see Utada! THE SHOW I wondered if the venue was breaking a fire code because the tiny place was PACKED and the coat room lady ran out of space, so we had to wear our bulky winter jackets during the show, squeezed up against people on all sides. I'd say over 50% of the audience was Japanese. Even though we had gotten there pretty late and were basically at the back of the room, the place was so small (as you can see in the pic Deep River posted) that everyone could say they were close to her. DJ Rizzo played for a while, including a really cool remix of "Dirty Desire", but everyone started getting impatient because it seemed like he kept saying, 'just 5 more minutes until Utada!!" When Utada came out.....my friend and I started jumping up and down screaming and holding hands like fools. I just couldn't believe I was like...breathing the same air as her. She sounded so beautiful the whole time, even though the music was so ridiculously loud, she sometimes got drowned out. She absolutely knocked "First Love" and "Stay Gold" out of the park. Someone on here said they were surprised that they probably liked the Exodus songs the most, and I have to say I had a similar feeling. One problem (imo) about the songs on Exodus is they all sound like they were produced by a computer, with weird electronic noises. But hearing them played by an actual band with actual instruments really improved their sound. "Devil Inside" in particular was remixed AMAZINGLY. And she did sing Boku Wa Kuma because she was "In a good mood", which actually was really cute, more so because she somehow forgot some of the lyrics. Someone in the audience waved around a stuffed bear, too. The MC sections were really fun. Her personality came across as really likable, down-to-earth, and fun. She spoke in English and Japanese. One guy in the audience shouted, "I can die happy now!" and she laughed, "no no, there is so much more to live for!" She said that when she was 20 or so she used to think that she didn't want to live a long time, but now she's grown to believe that "the future is full of good things." She spent a lot of time talking about how Boston has so many students and it makes her want to be a student again, even though she was a university drop out. She remembered seeing old ladies in her classes, and said that she plans to go back to school when she is an old lady, "if this whole music thing doesn't work out." She told a story of how she came to Boston 10 years ago with a friend, and was taken to a filthy Chinese restaurant where she got some horrible soup with all kinds of "chicken anatomy" in it. She also made fun of the venue, saying it was "weird" because it had a the terrible design flaw of a BIG PILLAR right in front of the stage. She said she would have to try and focus on singing to us and "not to the pillar." It was a pretty stupid design choice, to be sure. She also said that this was the smallest venue in her tour, and "very intimate," which made everyone cheer. She said that pictures and videos of her from these concerts were popping up on the internet and on Youtube, and it "made her weary," because people were coming into her shows knowing what to expect. (At that point, an audience member shouted, "surprise us!" and she replied, "maybe I will...") She could also read people's comments about the shows on message boards, asking, "you're all going to write good things about this, right?" and we all cheered. When she sat down to play the keyboard, she said in Japanese, "I've never done this in Japan," bringing a cry of "eeehhh?" from the Japanese audience members. When she introduced her band members to us at the end of the show, only one of the guys was Japanese, and she said "NIHONJIN REPRESENT!!" (nihonjin = Japanese people) After leaving the stage, everyone chanted loudly for "ENCORE" and "UTADA" and clapped and stomped their feet. She came back in maybe 3 minutes, saying, "thanks for calling us back out here....I really thought my dressing room was going to cave in from your stomping." People were shouting song requests the whole night, and she said, "I wish I could sing all my songs for you guys." Finally, she stated that "Me Muero" which was the final song she sang, was "Probably her favorite song." No idea why....personally, I think it's kinda lame. Oh yeah, and before she sang "Dirty Desire", she asked us to request the song on the radio if we liked it, "but if we didn't like it, don't bother with it," LOL. I did see one guy get thrown out for taking pictures, and another person carried out at the very beginning of the show, looking like he was passed out drunk. (too much excitement for him to handle, I guess) In conclusion.....such an awesome time. She had so much energy and passion and her voice was wonderful. I had a BLAST singing along to every song, screaming my head off, jumping around, and just being a part of the whole thing. I just wish there would be a DVD of this, or that they at least sold some merchandise!

I'm about to head to NYC for the NY show...hopefully people aren't deciding to line up at like 4pm, cause that would just be REALLY annoying.

Looks like her next signed くまボール designs for the NY show might be one of these two! I don't think she's decided just yet on which one she wants to do. In the blog (link above) she has a picture of her two brainstorming ideas. One is clearly based off King Kong (and you can even see, up at the top on her laptop screen in the background, a file with the name "King Kong" in it). The other obviously is based off the Statue of Liberty. ![]() I am so jealous...she is so cute doing all of this for her fans, unique to every show and place she goes to. |

I think they filmed all the shows. There was someone filming the Hawai'i show.

Well, they filmed other shows too. Chicago was filmed, she even mentioned it because she was being shown on the television screens behind the bar.
Unless you mean there was like a camera crew?

Yeah. I know there were screens at Chicago, and Hawaii, and others but this time I think it was like a camera crew.
