I'd always have those front-loaded but huge sales back than a long chart life with these sales

Well...
HUGE sales with short chart life = big fanbase, little interest from everyone else
Little above average sales with long chart life = reduced fanbase with big interest with everyone else...

Considering she is not having a 2nd peak or something right now, long chart life means she is renewing her fanbase, what is very good for her...

Selling 400 copies for a few weeks more doesn't really mean that the interest is big from everyone else. I don't think Ayu's fan base got that reduced compared to 2006. Just that some people stopped buying cds. If you think about it, AHS has at least 10 000 fans, only a few hundreds buy cds. I am not really convinced her fan base is renewing. Did you see the Best Artist 2010 pie-chart? Ayu doesn't have that many fans in 10-20 years-old age groups in Japan.

Selling 400 cds for weeks means something, it's 1,6k+ sales per month... what also means:

1 - Her sales are showing on charts, what means she is selling far more than most
2 - Not every of her albums were able to do that, what IMO means they grew old faster than the ones who are able to keep chating
3 - The constant charting also means people, that are not part of her die-hard fanbase (those already bought it on the month of release) are getting interested on getting the album.

It's not like she was selling for months with a mediocre final number... she is selling for months and she will end selling far more than most artists in Jpop (considering jpop is not made of 20 acts, but of hundres or thousands), what IMO is always good. Everytime she sells lots at once and drop from charting, this means people bought the new product of that trenddy popstar, and not really music they enjoyed...

So, IMO, everytime ayu keeps strong on charts, even if she is not on the top5, she is showing how much power she has as a jpop icon

Yeah selling 500,000 first week and then another 5,000 on the rest would put her straight on #2 yearly. XDD
