I have been out of the Mai loop! I haven't heard any of the singles from the new album OVER THE RAINBOW. Getting it now to give it a listen - I've heard many bad things about it, but I'm willing to judge it for myself. Currently relistening to Future Kiss, and I really like boyfriend!

^Interestingly enough, I'd say ONE LIFE is one of her worst albums, but that's just me.

It's ridiculous how Mai Kuraki is underrated within international jpop fans, yet she is quite popular in Japan. I mean, my best bet for getting the latest news about a new release from Mai is to look at her official website. There isn't even a place where I could discuss her music with fellow fans. There are simply not a lot of international fans of her around here. Even last.fm is pretty lacking with any shouts either on her artist page or songs pages. It's kind of frustrating, to be honest.

Anyway, she is releasing a new single called "TRY AGAIN" (thank you CDJapan for sending me a new release notification, otherwise I would probably never know about it unless I randomly checked her website), on 02.06.2013.

Also, go here to hear the preview of the song (sounds amazing to me).

I love the FC cover the most, and the CD only the least. But they are all pretty great.

^My favorite is OVER THE RAINBOW actually. It had a beautiful theme and a great concept. Flow was great, and every song was greatly produced and it is extremely fun to listen to. Don't get me wrong, ONE LIFE is an amazing album, it's just that out of all of her albums it's my least favorite (keep in mind I'm still getting into her 3 oldest albums, so I can't say for sure if it will be my least fav or not). Also, I think that "If I believe" is probably her second best album (it's amazing from start to finish), so if you somehow still haven't listened to that one, I recommend it. FUTURE KISS comes third, followed by touch me!, DIAMOND WAVE, FUSE OF LOVE and finally ONE LIFE.

I'm interested to know if you are familiar with her whole discography or? What did you think of OVER THE RAINBOW and could you explain why do you think ONE LIFE is her best album?

I hope we could keep this thread active, if even just for a bit!

My favorites are Touch me and OVER THE RAINBOW

But her most recent singles are probably some of her best to date, oh and also PUZZLE.

I'm not really a fan but I do like most of her songs, I'll try to update here as well as often as I can as I tend to often check for news from her

I actually got into her because of ONE LIFE and its why i hold it in high regards. its like ayu and secret.

I've listened to her entire discography and i find it too same-y.
but i love her debut album and some of perfect crime

i actually like delicious way the song a lot. its my most played mai-k song.

I'm having a hard time with her older work because it sounds so dated now, unlike ayu's or namie's.. But I do think most of her recent singles are pretty much different from what she used to release

Well, Namie's SWEET 19 BLUES, Concentration 20 and GENIUS 2000 (not to mention stuff with SUPER MONKEYS) sound very much dated to me, but that really isn't anything bad. Quite the contrary, Namie's first few albums were IMO one of her best ones.

But anyway, I remember reading somewhere that Mai's older music is not that good, so when I started listening to If I Believe for example, I thought it was going to be horrid but it actually blew most of her other newer albums out of the water. I was very surprised with that one. Am currently listening to FAIRY TALE and it sounds pretty good, even if again, I read a review that says it's a terrible album.

What do you guys think of her b-sides though? I mean the ones not included on the albums, especially older ones. I'm addicted to Rescue Me, and adore b-sides like Winter*Swear, Cuz' you'll know that you're right, Ai wo Motto, Moon Serenade, Moonlight; and gonna keep on tryin'.

And when I'm still at tracks that were not included on studio albums, I absolutely adore Eien Yori Nagau, even if most people somehow seem to dislike that song.

OMG! These are some of her best covers in a while.

Her older music makes up a good chunk of my childhood, so I love listening to it along with Ami Suzuki, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Namie Amuro's older songs.

EDIT: I am completely in love with Strong Heart. How can anyone not love this woman?!

^I agree, Strong Heart is such an amazing song (and most of her work with Giorgio Cancemi is undoubtedly amazing).

I find it so sad international jpop fans don't care for her, almost at all. Like I said, it's hard to even find someone who loves her music who I can communicate with about it.

^I see. Could you please explain to me what exactly do you mean by her getting "too samey"? It's because I really think her recent work has lots of variety between the albums. OVER THE RAINBOW is very different to FUTURE KISS, for example. touch Me! also had a very special and different feel from anything she's released. I can't really say any of her albums are really that similar or same sounding. I guess that's just my way of seeing it, though.

Do you like the whole delicious way album or just that one song? I'm still listening through FAIRY TALE and it grew on me a lot, but I'm very curious about how Perfect Crime and delicious way will sound to me.

Not all, though. I loved ONE LIFE just because it was my first mai K album. It was a nice experience.
I'm looking forward to her next single though. It's gonna be a dance track. I hope it's like wana meets born to be free.
