I am pretty sure that 濱崎歩 is her given name in kanji because she mentioned it off-handedly in a Hey! Hey! Hey! episode before (read this entry which is only in Japanese).

Quote:
次は濱崎歩さん、ayuの本名とまったく同じ字!
Next is Hamasaki Ayumi-san, who has the exact same kanji as ayu's real/given name!

That's interesting, I was sure it was "spelled" with 浜 originally.

Does anyone actually know for sure?

IIRC in some of her early acting stuff she was credited with the kanji given name.

I'm sure you're right. I remember in the beginning of her (pre-music) idol video, there was a scroll at the bottom which listed her given name as 濱崎歩, but the box art had her name written as we know it today, 浜崎あゆみ.

You know, it's soooo cool. They have all the fun with names, switching kanjis, writing it with hiragana/katakana... elsewhere it's soo boring >__>

BTW, did you notice Utada Hikaru has her name written in katakana? 宇多田ヒカル instead of 宇多田光. Oh, she's such a copycat! XD

Can someone explain the difference in meaning of 浜 and 濱 to me? I don't know any of those kanjis.

There's also the possibility that the people who made the movies spelled it with 濱 by mistake, but that is extremely unlikely... hehe.

Ooh...before I thought that 濱崎歩 was used only because the 浜 from 浜崎 doesn't exist in Chinese, thus they used a homonym, which is 濱 and it means the same thing...and that they had to translate あゆみ into 歩 since it literally means step (other wise they can't translate あゆみ because it's Japanese characters). Thanks for clearing this up, I was so confused before.
I bet she found the current "hama" easier to write than the other one xD

Seems not. That lil' kanji seems to have a lot of readings depending on the use. Plus, if there's that "kanji-only names" law, they wouldn't let her.

Very true, hehe.

@CREA.tive, how much the same thing? I know they're pronounced the same way, but are the meaning of the kanjis the exact same? Or is it like shinde said, that 浜 doesn't exist in chinese?

^浜 does exist in chinese but it's pronounced as "bang" and it doesn't exactly mean the same thing as in japanese.

濱崎歩 is the traditional Chinese words, while the simplified Chinese words is 浜崎歩. Both are the same meaning, don't get confuse. that's all, BOTH are her names.

Ah, that sounds like a good explaination.

BTW, What's the difference between simplified Chinese and traditional? Is it just simpler characters or does it carry differences in pronounciation/grammar or such?/..

Regarding the 浜崎あゆみ or 濱崎歩

濱崎歩 is the chinese name for ayumi
あゆみ is the hiragana for 歩
歩 actually means ayumi
so in japanese it's 浜崎歩 but they use the hiragana for 歩 which is あゆみ

Actually her given name wasn't the problem, since it (as kanji) appears the same everywhere, the confusion was with 濱 and 浜.
