avex probably already knew that a single released too close wouldn't sell well, but did it anyways because they might have wanted to tie and break that Female Single #1 record faster before it was too late.

EDIT: Talking about B&D/Pride.

I agree, giving that status to Ayumi is more important than the total sales, it meant Avex has a legend in their hands. Status, power and more future sales/contracts.

^Well that is if B'z stops releasing or stops getting #1, which I don't think will happen anytime soon.

She can always try the 12 days of christmas thingy, but limit each single to 150 000k. Ok, that's a stupid idea.

She can always try releasing a triple A-side CD+DVD+Photobook+Poster every 3 months for a period of 3 years.

Well it would have to be every week since only 1 single can top each week. And 150,000 might not be enough if she's against a Johnny group.

Well, she can always go "OMG LAST MINUTE DELAY" when a Johnny product gets in the way. But I don't think people would snap up all the copies, but that's just me.. At least the songs would sound 38902374x better and un-fillerish though.

THe releases last year were weird. Remeber HEAVEN coming really close to fairyland, then right before the album B&D/P was released. I'm thinking it's because of the geo project, they might have planned another single before (m) u but since ayumi wanted to release some of the GEO songs, they had to wait to finish it properly...? Or she might've just decided "on impulse" when she heard the GEO songs. Anyways, I think that she was aware of the fact that it was a risky project.

^Well the HEAVEN single had to be released that close with fairyland because of the movie tie-in.

People comment all the time that her music quality have dropped, that they barely listened to My Story and decided not to buy (miss)understood among other things (and no, I'm not talking about western blogs before people come with the "japanese people have a very different taste" excuse). And if opinions on the internet aren't a good proof, then just look at album and single sales and please don't come with the "waah.. but the ilegal downloads and iTunes are the reason" because they're not. Ayu don't have any Top 10 yearly single anymore or Top 5 yearly album, so it's obvious there's not as many people interested in her music (and that wasn't my initial point, my initial point was that people didn't like the music she was doing since My Story, but because people always think this info come out of the blue and they don't want to believe that, I have to be more especific).

Who cares about what other people say? Who cares what sales figures say?

When I listen to Ayu, I don't think about what some blog or forum has said or how well the single or album is doing on the Oricon chart. What I consider "good music" will always transcend these things.

The opinion of what you consider "the majority" is not equal to fact. So you've read and compared all the opinions of the 1,000,000 people who purchased My Story or the 800,000 people who purchased (miss)understood? (That's not counting overseas sales, people who've borrowed the album and listened to it, people who've legally and illegally downloaded it). The world is a big, big place, and blogs and reviews are only a tiny fraction of reality. Alert me when you've read at least 200,000 negative reviews of people not pretending to have listened to these albums, then I'll take what you say about "people not liking her music nowadays" seriously.

In my opinion, My Story is the most underrated Ayu album I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I would put it just below I Am..., and I'd definitely say it is the most thematically coherent album Ayu has released. It's an album that actually sounds like an album and not a collection of great songs, which is what most J-pop albums sound like.

^ In that case we'd also have to go "phooey to all sales numbers" which might be a wee bit impossible for Avex.

In my opinion, My Story is the worst album from Ayumi sonically but it is true that My Story is the most thematically coherent album she has. I Am... and (miss)understood sound like singles collections, therefore not capable of creating an individual atmosphere.

I wouldn't call any Ayu album underrated with her sales. Even her worst performing studio album sold close to 900,000.

Well, sales don't really say if an album => good do they? :/

No, sales is a really puzzling thing. Very inaccurate in determining quality if you ask me. It's way too influenced by promotion these days that it's beginning to overlook quality.

However, I think that around 45% of sales is determined by quality and that's still quite a big number.
