It'll probably be a yearly thing for Namie fans to enjoy every September.

The Ginowan City Tourism Promotion Association in Okinawa actually sent in an application to make September 16th, Namie's retirement day, into an official anniversary holiday in Japan (or at least just in Okinawa itself).

So Okinawa is pretty serious about all this

I think it's a pretty harmless gesture. It's probably nothing more than a piece of paper that lets them say September 16th is ~officially~ Namie Amuro Day.

Apparently anyone in Japan can file an application to make an anniversary holiday. And the acceptance rate is pretty high: 3 out of 4 applications get accepted lol. All you need is 150000yen, a clear purpose for the holiday, and for the day to not infringe on the rights of others

Right now there's over 2000 anniversary holidays in Japan. What they are.... I have no idea

^ Okay perhaps I got a bit carried away However I do think that Okinawa and Namie are pretty synonymous in the Japanese pop culture sense. At least in the modern 2010s context.

^ I don't think Namie and Okinawa are related in people's mind... I never knew anyone telling me that they wanted to go to Okinawa because it's Namie's hometown lol People knows Okinawa as the tropical oasis inside Japan, so that's the main reason why people go to Okinawa. Of course Namie helped making her fans traveling to Okinawa but it's a bit naive to say she's the reason Okinawa is popular, imo. Also Namie is not the only famous Okinawan in Japan. Gackt, Aragaki Yui, Orange Range, Daichi Miura, etc are all from Okinawa.

Perhaps the way I phrased it didn't come out right.

I think Namie serves as a good representation of Okinawa in a pop culture aspect which was then acknowledged by the local government. It was literally why she got the Okinawa National Honour Award. So perhaps she did not make Okinawa popular or famous, nor is she the only huge Okinawa celebrity, but she is now ONE FACET and a very big representation of the prefecture. And yes, I agree with you pedronekoi, it's a bit naive for me to say that she was the sole reason of Okinawa's fame. But I think she definitely has one way or another contributed to it. Heck, they're even making a bronze statue and even a museum of her as part of Okinawan tourism!

Anywho, my point is, commemorating her in Okinawa isn't all that extreme because of her significance, and that September 16 is both her debut and retirement date. Okay I'm out!

I think Ayu is from Fukuoka.

And yeah, Namie is a big part of Okinawa's fame but she's not the only famous Okinawan. That said, they're literally building a statue of her there so they're upping the tribute factor for sure, plus all the Okinawa travel commercials featuring Namie in the last few years. Whether they're going overboard is a matter of personal taste and perspective.

ANOTHER THING. I wonder how Namie feels about all this since she was pretty clear on wanting to live a normal life and not be in the spotlight. I have a lot of Namie thoughts.

The articles about the holiday registration mentioned that the Ginowan Association did reach out to Namie, and she gave her consent for them to submit the application. She probably trusts they'll use her image/name respectfully.

Even though she's retired, I think she's still actively managing her intellectual property behind the scenes when needed. (Or has someone that helps her do so)

Like she was definitely involved in the negotiations of the Apple Music streaming deal. And she probably gives her opinions on new Emina character designs. And etc.

^yes, she’s definitely still working behind the scenes, at least at her personal management, they still have to pay her every time they use her image, so she or her team/manager likely has to approve each time. I think she once said in an interview that she would stay in the industry behind the scenes, maybe mentor an upcoming artist or something but stay out of the public attention.

Yeah...it wasn’t exactly cheap. It was heat of the moment kind of purchase. But I Was able to account for the cost. And I didn’t take a full day off work for an entire year.

Okinawa has a new project called the GINOWAN HEART PROJECT.

They've set up a special mailbox, designed to be a replica of Namie's #ALLFOR916 mailbox. This is an actual working mailbox, and mail sent through this mailbox will be stamped with a Namie stamp. It will be up until next year.

They're also selling postcards, based off of the ALLFOR916 message cards. Portions of the sales of these cards will be donated to help combat child poverty, as well as supporting local culture/entertainment/sports auditions in hopes that more children will get the chance to achieve their dreams.
