I probably wouldn't care for her one squat if she was another typical pop puppet.

I honestly don't care. If the artist has control over what s/he does then awesome. If not then - whatever :\ I dunno. I guess I just don't take the entertainment industry so seriously.

i'd lose interest
i like to connect with her lyrics
if she didnt write them, then it would feel like she was a puppet or something. a singing machine like in alterna.

i listen to people who DONT write their own lyrics. but there's a price to pay for that: I hardly care for them on a personal level.

The fact that Ayu writes her own lyrics makes her my favorite artist. There's just something different about writing your own lyrics, it adds so much more meaning and emotion to the whole song. Not to mention it gives me an insight to whats going through her mind. I can relate so much with her through her own personal lyrics.

And let's not forget CREA. The songs she created are some of her greatest hits/masterpieces, the songs themselves are so unique, it sets her apart from so many other artists. Nothing screams "control over my career" than writing your own lyrics and making your own songs (although I wish she would bring back CREA ).

And like alternafan000 said, some of her unpopular decisions give her integrity

The fact she writes everything herself is what I love most about her. Because when I can feel like I can connect to her lyrics; I feel that I can connect with Ayu as well.

It's not all that important to me now. I probably respected her a lot more when I became a fan, but nowadays...I just want good music. I don't care much for her lyrics now.

Very important. That's what made her such a force to be reckoned with. She's a true artist.

...it's insanely complicated for me.

I wouldn't mind her not writing lyrics or anything if I loved the music. I mean, I love a good deal of SNSD's music. They sure as hell didn't write that **** lol Maybe the lyrics...but I don't really care about them.

I tend to respect musicians that know how to compose and can compose WELL. Example, hikki, MAA, Emi Hinouchi. They compose very well.

Lyrics for me is more of a big bonus.

Ayu is really the only artist that I loved more for their lyrics. It was always more about the actual music for me, and I still favor it.

I mean, if I desired beautiful words, I'd look to poetry, or literature.

Artists who have good music and good lyrics are a different kind of artist. Not everyone expresses themselves the same way, and I don't need them to.

So...uh. It depends on the person.

Koda doesn't write her own songs, and god knows the level of control she has over her career. But that chica is fabulous, she's my favorite, and she's constantly impressing me with her performances, creativity, diligence, and integrity.

^^...the thing about art, is that people put different things into it. While some people sing stories about their life, others, or life in general...some people might want to talk about the sea, or how pretty colors are.

Personally, I can connect with koda, because I can identify with how she expresses her personality through song. The same facets of her personality exist in mine.

I'm actually not so big on personal story type things when they're Ayu level obvious lol. I don't really think I'd like a song from her about having a baby.

I prefer her vague musings from when she was figuring out life.

Ayu and Kuu are on opposite sides of the field when it comes to personal life being a part of their careers. And as it seems, people will complain either way.

Also, Kuu does write a lot of her own lyrics. Not all of them, but a pretty damn good chunk. And considering that she also self-produces now. I got respect for that. And the same goes for Ayu. I mean, I don't mind if some one were to write a song or two for Ayu, as long as I can tell she is the one in control. Not to say that I can't like a singer who isn't, I totally do. But, I fangirl a lot harder for the women who control their careers.

Lyrics, to me, are everything in a song. The music itself could be a background garbage disposal sucking down some of last nights spaghetti and a chorus of rednecks screaming 'GET OFF MY LAWNNNNN' for all I care, but if the lyrics are meaningful and whatnot, I'd listen to it anyway. The main reason Ayumi is such a big part of my music interest is because I can connect with her lyrics in a way I, myself, can't explain. There are times I listen to her songs and it feels like she just stole the words out of my head... and put it in Japanese... years before I even... *ahem* thought them.

Anyway, you get my point. I love the fact that she writes her own lyrics and is in control. It's inspiring. Makes me wanna work harder.

Very important, I wouldn't be a fan otherwise. She's a true artist and I look to that with most of the music I listen to.

Have any of her lyrics ever been co-written? I find it amazing she has never shared that duty with anyone, like she never wanted to and that her lyrics should come from her and her only.

Very important ! I really like when I hear to a singer that this is this person who is responsible of the lyric and more when it takes part of the composition/production etc... For me a true artist is someone who does more that just sing on a song created for anyone !
