The XX is basically replacing a person's name.

But not necessarily just the name of a person that Ayu knows, it's so everyone can insert a name as to direct the song to the person in question.

Does this make any sense? haha

It's not the roman letter "x", it's a japanese symbol that looks very similar to it and that means "feel this space"... So, the song name is read as "A song for" and the xx is replaced to whatever or whoever u feel the song fits in ur life...

As the "XX" stands for something like "insert-whatever-you-want-here", I have even thought it could mean "ryoushin" ("parents" in Japanese). But this is just me ^_-

I always thought XX was standing for two japanese characters.

I had no idea there is a kanji that looks like X. Can someone give a link to verify this, such as on jisho.org or something?

From a translation by Delirium-ZerO on ayu-mi-x ( http://www.ayu-mi-x.com/modules.php?...iewtopic&t=669 )

Would you mind telling us the meaning of your album's title, "A Song for XX"

Ayu: The "A" in "A Song for XX" is both the "A" in Album, and the "A" in Ayu. As for the "XX", listeners can insert their favorite thing, the name of a person they care about, something like that. All that matters is that listeners imagine something there. Inside Ayu, there is only one meaning applied to the "XX". But, since everyone who listens will have different ideas as to who that song is about, I didn't want to limit the definition of "XX" by specifying its meaning to me, so listeners can themselves attach a meaning to it easily.

Ugh, I can't remember the interview source (maybe someone else can) but I think she said once that it was essentially about her mother (which you can also tell from the lyrics..) I'll have to drag out my thesis bibliography if nobody else can remember.

But yes, she put ni the XX so people can fill it with whoever they want the song to be about.

I recall the source was the ALL NIGHT NIPPON interview with Ayu that masa translated.

Though we have seldom met nor talked together recently, I've noticed now in my age that I had learned a lot from that person in many senses. I've looked at the person as a woman, Hamasaki Mariko, for twenty years and thought I would not like to be a woman like her and would not like to make the same mistakes as hers. I've learned a lot from my mother in such senses. Sorry for my nasal voice. Honestly speaking, there are no points in her at all I like or I dislike, maybe because I've never looked at that person as a human. Well, this is the song whose title is that of my first album, too. "A Song for XX". I'd like you to insert whatever words you like to the part XX. Well, I wrote this lyrics in my own manner thinking about the person I've told you now, which some of you may understand only by listening to this song. Please listen. "A Song for XX" by Hamasaki Ayumi.

Didn't she say about Virgin Road that it's dedicated to her mother, and that it's like A Song for XX -part II-? (I'm pretty sure she said that on twitter)

^ yes, you're right. When asked about whom Virgin Road was for, she said it's for her mother, just as A Song for XX.

The closest thing I can think of is 乂 and I really doubt it's that, given what has now been revealed in this thread and in interviews. I really love how deep the interpretations are on this site! It is deserving too, since Ayu is a really talented songwriter.

If I'm not wrong, it's not a kanji. It is "batsu batsu", actually -I mean, if you type this, you'll get these XX. But in this case, it is made silent.

very heartfelt lyrics those of Virgin Road, very personal, lots of info... in just one song.

Thank you everyone for clarifying the whole thing. I thought XX stood fo her father!
